Default Trans Am L33/4l80e/78/75 Build

I will admit I didn't originally intend on making this thread but as I accumulate pics for the owner I wanted to share them with others so maybe they can get some useful ideas or just kill some downtime while at work. So forgive me if the pics aren't perfect.

The car is an 02 TA, long story short the guy bought the car used with a 402ci motor which ended up being junk. It has been sitting in his garage for quite a while on jackstands, and recently i offered to help him out with the labor so we can get the car back on the road. Build will be a SBE 5.3, Huron Speed 78/75 kit, locally built 4l80e, Circle D triple disc converter, and a Moser rear.

He drug the car over on a trailer, and first thing's first me and JR start pulling crap we dont need. We pulled all the underhood stuff that was easily accessible, including cruise, TCS, brake and fuel lines, ABS module, AIR pump.

While this isnt gonna be a full on race car, it isnt gonna be a full on street car either. The goal is somewhere in between for now. So bye bye fender supports.

Intercoolers take up space, everything up front fights for air. If you've seen my build thread you know I like doing my own thing. So he decided to let me hack away and do dual rear mounted trans coolers. So bye bye TTop well.

Replaced it with some 16g sheet metal, used seam sealer and some bolts to lock it in, and shot it with some paint for now. We may go back and add carpet later.

Two trucool coolers about 11x11 and 2 10 inch fans.

These will be plumbed with -6AN and split before and after the coolers so they are running in a parallel circuit.

2006 L33 with 131k on it. New GM waterpump, UD pulley. Lots of scrubbing and black paint.

LS9 gaskets, ARP studs.

BTR springs cam and whatnot. Also has a C5R chain, damper, and Melling HP pump inside.

Stock LS6 intake and TB.

Valve covers get some love.

Looks pretty nice.....the owner's request was as much low key as you can, nothing flashy.

Turbo drain and feed line done.

Stock fuel system.......gone!

BMR turbo k member and lots of other random **** I gotta wade through.

Stock front suspension removed.

Rear driver's side PCV bung. It will be -10AN.

Rear passenger side PCV, notice I had to trim the coil pack bracket some. Also, these are bulkhead fittings but I dont use the supplied plastic washers, use orings, it will seal better. Old oil pump orings fit great.

Dual 450 pumps installed. -8 feed, -6 return.

Moser 9 inch, narrowed, aluminum center, 3.25 gears, 35 spline, 1/2" studs etc

Return line done, feed line up to the firewall where we are gonna split it and dual feed the rails. New rear brake line made.

Trans dipstick, catchcan, new oil PSI sending unit.

AC delete done and sealed but i ran out of paint.

Engine bay degreased.

Wheelwells degreased and painted.

Initial cut made for the stand up radiator.

Test fitting

Twin derale fans in a pusher configuration. Going to use a Racetronix fan wiring harness also.

Little top plate mockup

Had just a touch of paint left, not enough to do under the hood so that will have to wait.

Catchcan mounted.

Intercooler painted. Notice my fancy paintbooth.

Test fitting rear wheels over stock brakes. Need to determine whether we need drag brakes or can get away with trimming. Still on the 10 bolt in this pic.

Not sure on that. This was a squash dual 450 bucket and a Nasty line kit. I did 8/8 on my car but not sure of the benefit.

Not yet........

I figure, why lower a 400 pound motor onto a k member when i can lift the 25 pound k member to the motor.

Remember to lube your snout gentlemen.

Drilled and tapped for a pressure outlet, and had to re-clock the cold side.

Hotside and most accs bolted up

exhaust, turbo blanket, and wastegate mounted. We are gonna start with a 7.5 spring setup for now.

Intake, rails, 160lb injectors and TFS steam vent kit mounted.

love the build, I'm doing the same now on my TA. Would love to see more of the brake line ideas with the deleted abs/tcs and bmr k member. Also what it takes to swap over to a 4l80e.

Great job thus far!!

Heres the idea for the brake lines:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/suspensio...bs-delete.html

Some people love it or hate it. Here's the facts. Ive heard compression style fittings arent DOT rated for brake lines. In the past there were some vehicles that came stock with them. You can investigate for yourself and see their pressure rating far exceeds what happens in a brake system. Their reputation in the industrial field is stellar, and most will tell you a line will explode before the fitting comes off. The fitting, by design deforms the line and physically holds it in place. For those thinking its not safe, will run AN fuel lines over the top of a hot exhaust manifold, which has the exact same sort of pinch the line compression, and not near the pressure rating, and think that's fine and safe.

As far as the 80e, you'll need to do a few things. One is a new front DS yoke and a new trans crossmember, you'll need to cut a notch for the electrical connector on the drivers side, you'll need to repin your harness or buy the nelson add on plug, and you'll need to segment swap your PCM so that it can control the 80e and read the front input speed sensor. If you have a 97 and up trans, I advise using a banjo style fluid fitting or you'll need to notch on the passenger side for a 90 degree fitting to clear (rear fitting only).

Start here and it shows the cuts needed, the next page shows the pins you must add to the PCM.

And just to prevent some PA guys from having trouble come safety inspection time if they follow this build. A compression fitting will fail PA Safety Inspection. I'm not saying there's a problem with them. PA does. Like so many things, I think if they are used/installed correctly, they work fine.

Now back to your regularly scheduled kickass build!
