i would like to run a single tali pipe exhaust on my formula, i like the 2otl slp set up but finding isnt all that easy and the mufflex one is my only other choice.

anyone running a single exit exhaust? if so what muffler are you using?

If you like the 2otl system, just get a dual outlet Flowmaster or Magna flow and mount it where the OEM muffler goes. Then run the tailpipes as above

I've been running a single Hooker Maxflow 3" in/out for years now and it is the favorite of the many different exhaust systems I've tried. Get the Walker/Dynomax I and OTA pipes and have a muffler shop fab a turn-down exhaust pipe. Flows better than any conventional aftermarket catback, sounds good, and is much cheaper.

If you do a search on Maxflow on this forum you'll find my earlier threads about it with (hopefully still active) pics.

My 98 SS has a factory SOTL exhaust.
Single Out Tailpipe Left (SOTL) Exhaust System

I believe the only LS1 cars that got the SOTL catback were the ‘98 SS’s and WS6’s, very strange looking.“Yes, this was what came STOCK, from the FACTORY, if one did not opt for one the SLP system.”"In '98 the SS had a single outlet exhaust that had a 3.5 in. tail pipe which exited out the left side of the car. Apparently, this system proved to be louder than GM wanted so they switched to a dual exhaust look. The SLP dual-dual exhaust was the same as in '98, which required RPO Y2Y to get the SLP options."“I don't know if the SLP will be much louder than your single, but I remember reading in a Camaro magazine that the reason the single outlet was only available in 1998 was because it was a bit too loud for factory standards. They switched to dual set up next year...”“The dual/dual is quieter than the SOTL on the 98' it also makes a bit less power. Vibrant 1142 3" in 3" out. Half the size of the standard magnaflow/dynomax etc and less weight. Does a great job keeping a smooth tone behind my custom long tube and catless setup.

Do you get any reverberating sound from having exhaust ending before your bumper? I'm guessing that having the tip cut at a 45' helps. I have a Camaro and I don't really dig the way exhaust tips look on them.

I didn't dig it either, so I put 3rd gen turndown tailpipes on mine (you can still get these new as Walker/Dynomax), painted black. Looks 1000% better (compared to Magnaflow that I had). They exit right before the bumper, no weird sounds.

When do you think the single 3” would be a restriction?
I googled 3” hp ratings online but who’s putting down what hp wise and what’s your setup?
Do you all still get any ugly raspy sound out of it or just a nice deep tone cruising? Wide open rasp?

A single 3" is no more restrictive than a 3" in dual outlet muffler. In fact, less so with a straight through design like the Maxflow.

I get no rasp, except perhaps a very little when it's super cold. None at WOT. Sounds awesome. And that's with an ORY.

Rev, I saw you posted about the pipes to get, the walker Dynomax ones...
But they say 2.75” ID, isn’t that the same as stock sized piping or close to it?
Maybe I can just do the hooker muffler and a 3” like you all did if there’s really no difference in ID.

I think Summit lists them under the Walker name but the part numbers are the same:

I've always been intrigued by the '98-only single outlet exhaust on the WS6 and Z28 SS.

While I admit that the appearance seemed somewhat "off balanced," it had a unique tone that really sounded great.

I found a 98-only muffler and tailpipe assembly at a swap meet a few years back. It seems that it was a relatively-new take off for someone who went with an aftermarket setup. It's been sitting in my garage ever since. I've always been tempted to install a flange on it and the original small-case muffler on my '99 WS6 Trans Am so I could swap them around at will for a direct comparison. Maybe someday...

Just buy a 90* and a 45* pre-bent section.
