Default Mamo Sportsman 223 build

Going to start sbe build on a two owner (counting me) 98 ss Camaro. Previous owner installed bbk intake and 85mm tb also coolant filter and ***** thumper cam with comp rollers springs and retainers. I installed a 4.30 gear mwc fab nine, tick master and monster level three, also mwc lca’s umi sfc. Car ran fine for what I was,but always room for more. So got in touch with the man himself Tony Mamo. Parts list is attached in photos hoping to get around 450 at the wheels, going to try with the bbk for now also trying a more budget friendly Mamo build so to speak

Very nice. Will you be doing any dyno or track runs before and after?

I travel for work so I won’t get any before runs however car allegedly dynoed 398hp to the wheels, so can kinda use that as a baseline.

Gotcha. I hear those heads are about the best you can get for a LS1. I'll be curious how it turns out

I can tell you from my own experience that the bbk is going to hold that build back big time! I did a stock bottom end build with prc stage 2.5 5.3 heads and ms4 cam through an M6. The build made 385rwhp with bbk intake. Jason at TSP told me to get that POS off and put a fast 92 intake and TB on. I took his advice. Also took the MAF off and went speed density. Same dyno 2 weeks later the car put down 443rwhp!

I’ll run the bbk for a bit then step up to a 102 eventually

So you gained 58 rwhp just from the intake swap alone? Nothing other than some minor tweaks to the tune for the intake swap?

Seems kinda high to me I would think 15 to 20 hp? But I’m still a little green when it comes to ls1’s

I know there is the ever heat soak argument with the bbk but from what I gathered it’s more or less a ls6 intake

Yes they basically flow very similar to a LS6 intake. They do draw in a little more heat but I doubt it's an issue.

The numbers don’t lie. The bbk intake is not as good as the LS6. Like I said, TSP told me if I ditched the bbk for a fast 92 the car would probably pick up 50rwhp. They were right! Point is that the bbk is a pretty looking POS!

Gotta give BBK credit for having one of the first aftermarket intakes aimed at the LS1. But once the LS6 was out, game over for the BBK

That's very surprising. I seem to recall an article comparing all the intakes and the bbk and ls6 were within a couple hp of each other

There are a lot of factors that come into play when it comes to airflow through an intake... that being said, 50 rwhp is ALOT for just an intake swap. Granted anything is possible but I'd have to see some graphs to fully believe it lol.

OP - looks like a good build. I think ATM you're going to struggle to reach 450 at the wheels, mostly due to your intake. Go with a mamofied fast 102 and you'll be golden

Beautiful looking SS btw, I'm envious
