Default Possible Purchase Evaluation Help

Hi!
I looked at a 4th gen LS1 Fbody with under 15k miles today. While overall the car looked super clean, it did appear the rear differential was wet and the harmonic balancer had some wobble. I’m no mechanic so not sure if I’m evaluating this correctly. I have attached a video of the pulley and a picture of the diff. Thanks for any second opinions! I don’t want to bother the owner with these unless truly a concern.

I'm not a mechanic, but after 20 years the differential cover gasket can start to leak. Just get the fluid flushed and have them put a new gasket on.

The rear differential leak is likely from the pinion seal. They don't normally leak at the cover gasket (assuming it's original, which this one likely is with such low miles), but the pinon seal leak is quite common. My 20k mile car has some weeping at the pinion seal; it's not something I worry about as it's too minor to ever cause the diff to be low on lube.

As for the balancer, I've never seen an LS1 that didn't have some amount of wobble (all of my four have has this). But I can't see your video, so I can't tell how serious the wobble is in your case.

Yeah, pinion seal is a known leaker on these cars. You can do a search and see how many people had problems with it even after being replaced. I just hit 50k miles on my car and have had to replace it twice already.

I really appreciate the reply. This gives me some reassurance. I will at least ask about it. As for the balancer I tried to upload on Facebook Fbody Empire too. Maybe that works. If not, here is a

I could see the video OK. Seems 'normal' to me. Good luck if you purchase the car. Keep us posted. Photos too if you feel like it.

New video shows just fine. I wouldn't even really call that "wobble", looks totally normal for an LS1 to me. Engine bay looks a little dirty for a 15k mile car, but then most folks don't put proper effort into detailing unless they are showing the car so that's not a huge concern and could easily be cleaned up.

Good luck with the decision!
