New pics & work I've done on my Z swap!!!
Well.. the Z is out of the body shop and back home (as of October 1, 2004)! I drove her for the first time coming back from the body shop... it, was, AMAZING!
Aside from the popular 3rd-gear pop-out problem, all of the essentials ran great! The story following the pics is about my HUGE catastrophe while trying to get my car inspected! Now it overheats and needs quite a bit of cooling-sys work to get it back to normal!

Here are the pics:
Let's start off with a nice before & after set of the engine bay:
- Engine bay before: http://www.streetneeds.com/uploads/a...04_engine1.jpg
- Engine bay After!: http://www.streetneeds.com/uploads/a...ake+covers.jpg
And the rest:
My pretty Corvette fuel rail covers... They only required about 1/4" be sanded down on the rear of the passenger side cover to get them to fit.

A nice bay pic including my Nissan front emblem

The interior (I'm modifying my stock shift **** to replace the one in this pic)

My custom gauge pod: (Unfortunately, my oil-pressure gauge is leaking... I'm going to swap sending units for an electronic one)

A pretty, okay pic of my new wheels... they're just stunning when you see the entire profile of the car)

Not a bad set of wheels for only $650 shipped! Twisted Evil
When I got the car home.. I checked the oil.... NEARLY EMPTY!!!
So I bought 4 quarts of Royal Purple 10w40 to dump in there and save her before she dehydrates! I can't believe she's been running at that body shop with no oil! Sad Anyways.. good thing I checked.I did a TON of work on it on October 2nd:
- Fabbed up a custom-routed intake (I'm getting hard-pipes later)
- Installed my Vette FRC's (only 1/4" trimming required on passenger side!
)- Fixed all of my gauges 'cept my oil pressure gauge, which leaks inside the gauge pod!
I'm going to convert to electronic.- Cleaned up the interior & exterior a bit (it's been sitting for nearly 2 years!
)- Cleaned up the engine bay a LOT! theres still work to do, but it's much nicer now.
- Installed my new wheels! 18x9's all around and they are SWEEEEEET!
- Found & temporarily plugged a 1/2" hole in my oilpan (it was drilled for when I used to have the supercharger on)
- Installed a switch for my radiator fan in the interior so I can have it on all the time.
- Ordered new metal header gaskets (to fix my exhaust leak)
- Relocated the thottle cable bracket & readjusted the throttle cable
That was one LONG but extremely productive day! The car ran great, aside from needing to calibrate the speedo.. all the gauges work. Water temp never rose above 210'... it was all fine.
Then I went to get it inspected... just read my other thread to find out about that whole disaster...

thanks
LS1 is longer, but less wide than the VG
Weight:
LS1 + T56 is ~100lb lighter than the VG30De (thats non-turbo) + 5-spd
just more reasons that pushed me to do the swap.

The time my swap took has a really long explanation, but I'll cut out the extra stuff... if I wouldn't have had to go back up to school and didnt have any hang-ups... it would have taken 6 months tops. I'm still working on a few little things here & there, but nothing major anymore. There was NO info on this swap when I started. I pioneered the LS1 Z32 swap and I'm damn proud!
There was only one other Z32 with a v8 at that time and it was a carb'd 350 sbc... and only pictures were found, no information. I started the swap back in 2002 and since then.. another Z32 guy has put an LS1 into his car and I heard that he made up a manual for the swap... for a ton of hybrid Datsun/Nissan swap info, check out hybridz.org.
A LS1 miata would be insane!
Good luck on whatever you choose!-Vann

.. I was wondering if anyone would mention that! Kind of a mutt now... lol
