Question 400 bbc?

I have a bb 400 on a stand that my dad gave me yrs ago. It has been wrapped just sitting. I've now decided to start the build. I have all factory parts minus the cam and intake. Crank has been turned. pistons are on rods. and block has been decked, honed and line bored. new freeze plugs installed. So I've never actually built a bb before. Where do I start? I know it came with a lil pwr from the factory, but I want a lil more. I don't need a huge cam or anything. I have my 06 gto for that. I actually wanna drop the motor in my 95 ext cab. I want to be mildly conservative. Decent gas mileage, and decent pwr. I just need tips on Head work. do I get new ones or have the gone thru? what size cam intake combo? stuff like that. Please help.

.

If it's actually a BBC, then it's probably a 396 or 402. I would take everything apart & redo the assembly.
I'm not a fan of using something that sat for years without checking everything thoroughly.
As for cam, call the experts, let them do their jobs. I'm sure you will end up with a mild RV type piece.
Have the heads redone, don't spend money on a truck, like you would a hot rod.
If you tell people where you, you will probably find some help near by.

Look at the casting numbers and match them up here:

Like mrdragster said it's probably a bored 396, early 70's, they called 402. If not, it's a 400 ci SBC.
