305 tpi engine

i am going to be getting a 91 formula with a 305 tpi engine and i was wondering if the engine or is worth keeping? would i be able to get any serious hp and torque out of it ..the car has vortech heads and a zz4 cam already so are the 305 tpi engine capable of good hp and torque 300-400?? if so what mods would be required

Not really. the engine is good for what it was made for.. But not for all out performance. Especially not the tpi system since it loose breath at 4500rpm approx.

I have a 305 with headers, true duals, performer intake, Hei dialed in perfectly and a nice quadrajet. People are surprised of tis performance, but it will never become a good street racing engine cost wise to a 350/383

turbocharger or step up to 350 based engine.
i would just go turbo lsx, plenty tq there:devil:

Swap over everything to a 350 and you will have a 12 sec car. I have seen a zz4 crate motor run 12's in an f-body. With the zz4 crate having alum. l98 heads and you have the vortecs, the vortecs might edge out the l98 heads with it having a little bit bigger intake runner and better port design.

The 305 can be made to run well into the 13's on motor maybe a high 12 if done correctly but its a waste of time in my opinion. Me and my buddies had a 305 tpi car running 12.1 to 12.2 in the quarter on a 150 shot back in the day which was quick back then. Man, we took some money from people with that car!

300HP is doable with a 305 TPI. Is your motor from a 5 speed or automatic? Autos had the peanut cam which is from a TBI car which is terrible....

The peanut cam was in the 86 and 87 cars not the 91 and also he said there is a zz4 cam in it which is wayyyyy better than any TPI cam

The LB9 can be a fun little motor. I've got one in my 85 T/A, and with what little work I have in it, it'll hang with most Mustangs around here, at a stop light style race, and knock down 28 mpg on the highway, if I let it. It won't ever be a real power house though, as it's just not economical, that's why my plans for it are a 6.0 swap.

SMOKIN THE BANDIT 07-25-2010 09:45 PM

i really want to swap in a 6.0 as well but i am going to keep a tpi engine in it because i have an old friend that swears his car is the fastest tpi around and that my ls1 could only beat him by 1 car and a half and ive rapped him many times lol so i want to shut him up with the same engine ..he has a full bolt on l98 engine with heads and cam

Watch out! make sure he's not playing with you. My cousin's l98 z28 runs 11.60 with heads and cam and intake.

off topic, sorry

Anyone know what cam is in my 87 elky?

Its very fuel efficient, but the cam feels very dull!

87silverbullet 07-28-2010 03:09 PM

Original motor? 305? 350?

Najania 07-28-2010 03:49 PM

original 305.. It's an lg4 engine.. I have a performer plus cam laying around i could swap in it if it wouldnt hurt the fuel consumption but if they're basically the same cam it wouldnt be worth the effort. I will change the valve seals though.. They're leaking which is a common fault on these 305 engines:(

That wouldn't even be worth the time to change it.
