Default A little help with a little 283

I have an old sj 283 that's been bored .125 over and the stock forged crank. Engine came out "as a running engine" of an old dirt track car years ago so I should not have and cylinder wall thickness problems. For heads I was just planing on some worked over vortec's with a good set of springs and valves if cam or RPM dictates it. But I'm completely lost when it comes to pistons and rods. As I understand it, this use to be a pretty popular combo back in the day but not very many people seem to know much about it anymore. I'd like to end up with around 10.75-11:1 and spin it pretty high. Can anyone help with a piston/rod combo? There's gotta be a few old guys on here that know what I'm talking about. Lol

Any reason I couldn't use an off the shelf 350 piston with a 6" rod

283 has a 3.875 bore, while the 350 has a 4" one.

I know the stock bore is 3.875.

So basically your building a 302! Sounds like it could be a fun
project! A 302 is going to want to spin to at least 7000 or more.
It it was mine I would use a good scat bushed rod with 7/16 arp cap screws and a .100 dome forged piston . If it's in the budget. I think Keith black makes a dome piston for the vortec heads. I would have the heads machined for screw in studs, guide plates, machine valve guides down and cut spring seats so you can run at least a 1.460 spring. Call lunati, comp or crane and let them pick you out a camshaft. I would recommend a 2913 vortec super victor and a 750 carburetor. I have rode in a 69 camaro that was a factory DZ 302, 4 speed car and it would spin 7800 with no problems!

You can use a 6" rod just so it's a small journal.

This is what I needed to know! It's impossible to find 125 over 283 pistons anymore. That opens up my choices for pistons by 1000%. I just wasn't completely sure the compression hight deference between the standard 350 and 283 pistons.

It's hard to make compression with that 3" stroke. Try to get it with the head and then pick your dome. Valve to piston clearance will be critical too.
