My purpose is 400 to the wheels.... im planning on pulling a motor and building it ... I have a total of 6-6500 K to spend ... in total.. meaning i can find a car for about 3500 to 4 grand to build off of and 2 - 3 grand in parts. im doing the work myself . Originally i was thinking the LT1 motor or the L98 .. i came down to either stroking out an L98 or porting heads and putting a cam in an LT1 but i need a MINIMUM of 400 to the wheels.... i honestly dont know what to do

For your budget and 400hp, I would just find a car with a decent 350 and throw some money at the L98. Mine put down 400 with AFR heads, cam and an Air Gap with a 750 carb. Take the stroker kit money and invest in good heads!

I hope yo find a perfect car. Because to plan on buying a car, then building the motor. Sounds like a Dream IMO. Your'e gonna need things like- Radiator, suspension, Tranny, stall, rear, exhaust. Whatever the car itself needs. If a 3rdgen it need Subframe connectors. You should start by buying a car you like. Getting it running 100%properly. Maintaining it. Then after its looking and running good. Then think about performance upgrades. You're plan really makes no sense. Because chances are, if you're buying a 2-4K car. It's gonna need alot of work. What I mentioned earlier. Prob some body work, paint, interior. The list is endless. Just buy a car. Start with that.

I had old AFR 190 heads and a thin head gasket (10.5:1 compression) a 236/242 roller cam on a 109LSA, air gap intake, mighty demon 750, super comp headers. Peak power at 6500 and shift at 7000. Also used 4.10 gears in the stock rear and a 4000 converter in a relatively stock 700R4. 11.60@117 at sea level.

For the cam, get in touch with Mike Jones at Jones racing cams. Best in the business!!

I usually associate L98 with TPI. Take the TPI off and what is left? A SBC.
400 rwhp on a TPI takes a lot of money. Better off putting a carb intake

Could i use these parts with the stock L98 intake? or would i need to port or use an LT1 intake...?

TPI intake will strangle it..but you could use it. I would go carburetor or Miniram setup. Mine made about the same power with the Miniram and the carb.

TPI Large Runners

Hi Joe, I too KNOW the OEM TPI intake runners are VERY small, great Torque/low HP.

I have purchased OVER SIZE Intake Runners for TPI manifolds. (some porting required)

When you fit these you will more than meet you goal, cost is lower.

Lance, BTW I will order these for your needs if you ask ?

Holley Stealth Ram (HSR) is the way to go for you're needs. AFR 195's would be perfect with the right cam.. All this has been done 100.000.000 times on Thirdgen.org. A bizillion L98 builds there. Go there for some tried n true recipes for you're build.

You'll want a cam with a little more lsa then mine but here's my 91 firebird motor. My short block is different but for what you're doing I'd just get an eagle kit with cast crank, I beams, and hyper pistons. My cam is an comp xe274h flat tappet afr 195 eliminators with 75 cc Chambers. Performer rpm intake and 780 cfm carb. You'll probably want something like a stealth ram. Any way my compression is like 9.3 to one and the car has gone 11.42 @ 118mph
Just a good base line for what you want. Good heads and can go a long ways.
