Looking for suggestions on SBC Turbo system
Hey guys, I currently have a 408ci SBC in my Mazda truck, looking for recommendations for turbo (maybe something in the sub-1k range?), and possibly even some important guidelines from the pros for choosing a cam. Have run nitrous for years and am looking to trade that off for boost, though I'm really new to it. Pertinent information for my build is below:
408ci Gen I SBC
FiTech EFI 8
9.4 CR (2618 pistons)
NKB 200 heads (plans to change to AFR 210's in the future)
Lunati VooDoo 234/244 500/520 110 lsa solid cam (Hasn't been changed since before going EFI, recommendations?)
3200 Stall, 3.70 gears (possible planes to go 3.25 or even 3.00 for turbo?) 28" tire, street driven
Looking to maybe run about 8-10 psi on 93 octane pump (maybe ~600-650 rwhp?)
Exhaust is to be custom made with 1 3/4 primaries, 3" collector with a dump
Weight with me in it: 2960 lbs
Any specific recommendations, or anything regarding trim, in/ex sizes etc would be great. Also curious how necessary running an intercooler would be (tight on space). Thanks!

SBC Turbo
Hi Jason, my first SBC turbo customer/bit of kit was done in 1975 (Camaro)
My first EFI turbo was the Vector Car Engine for Jerry Wiegert.
I would KEEP your current heads AND add a 1.7 EX Valve with FULL PORT.
I would use a 2" Exhaust Primary.
I would replace the camshaft. (234* @ .050" equals 264* with turbo)
I would use an intercooler EVEN if small.
Would you like my/more help ?
Lance

On The Tree
I went through a few years of blow through turbo systems. One thing I figured out....unless you are really chasing a track number....It don't matter. I was slapping BWs475 and BWs480's on everything and a CSU carb. They ALL ran hard as hell. Didn't matter what cam, heads, cubic inches, nothing. This was in my Rx7. I would put in a more street, tune, friendly cam, and put it together. If it was me, I would do a BW s480 with a T6 1.10. Always seemed to spool very quick and ran hard. By the time I had them down, I was plumbing the waste gate shut. Never dyno'd, but took all it would put out.

sub 1k turbo systems generally are failure prone
you can run truck manifolds and cobble together the plumbing and buy a decent turbo for under 1k but you'll need
new cam
I'd run efi or at least e85 blow through carb (both are 1k + time you add fuel system)
porting is expensive
tuning
chassis
the list goes on. don't cheap out and be disappointed, plan out a realistic budget and be prepared for unexpected expense
