427 BB in a foxbody? am i insane??
 

i picked up an '86 mustang (V6,Auto) a few weeks ago for 350 bucks and have been wondering what to do with it. the motor runs fine, the tranny has a bad leak, but those are coming out anyways. so yesterday my buddy calls me and says he knows someone who is selling a GM 427 (not sure what it's out of, it's supposedly rebuilt???) and on came the light bulb. how difficult would it be to do this swap? i would prob use a GM tranny also(TH350,TH400), not sure which one though. thanks for any and all help guys!

anything is possible with time and money, i doubt it would a very complicated swap, go carbed and keep it simple. I cant think of a better motor to put in a ford lol

alright thanks for the reply. i figure the easiest place to make the ford/GM link would be at one of the u-joints, there has to something out there that will make this conversion possible(besides a cutting torch and a welder, lol). anybody know how a ford 9 inch rear is altered to fit in an f-body, like what piece on the rear end is changed from ford to GM? if it all goes through it will be carbed for sure, and if set up right should be wicked fast.

DO-IT, insane is where its at man. There's a guy in Lauderdale with a kit 427 A/C Cobra, he put a 454 bbc in it. I think its got like 700 RWHP, its awesome.

A friend of mine has a fox body with a 540ci bbc.It runs 8s on the kit.It's a fairly common swap in my area,the cars are light and the engines are all chevy :headbang:

right on guys thanks for the ideas and the the peer pressure :chug: , good peer pressure for once in my life, lol. i'm gonna look into that motor here within a week or so. i'll let you guys know if it ends up happening. anyone here know the details or any of the technical aspects on this kind of engine swap? thanks again everyone!

if you're going to go through the hassle of swapping a big block in, why stop at 427 cubes?

you can do 496 in most stock blocks. if you're gonna go big block go BIG!

:funny: I say go for it. But I'd have to have a sticker or something that said CHEVY POWER or something of that manner.

I know a local guy with a notch stang that had a carbed 468 BBF in it, now has A LOT more CUI though. Has quite a bit more room then you would think but its also gutted under the hood.

Might as well get a tubular k-mamber because the factory motor mounts will not work.

Yea the fox body is a great car, they are very light and hook up well, alot of people throw chevy motors in them. most the guys at my local track running real street are chevy powered foxbodys. one being a turbo small block traping 180 mph. "Built Ford tough with chevy stuff"

Hate to admit it, but that is a common drag set up. I have a buddy with a SBC in his. He loves it. Runs 8's on HP and pulls huge wheel stands. He makes a ton of $$ at the track betting the big block guys. I believe he ran plates to make the swap easy.
Custom headers and you're good to go.

there's also a lot of guys in the conversion section of this forum putting ls1's in the fox body cars. i bought mine from a guy i know who built it and will be doing plenty to it to make it faster & lighter. as anyone on here will tell you, there's a LOT of potential with the ls1 motors, and they're Light too! lol. good luck.....either way, i like the way you think!

Hmmm......if I were in your shoes.....

The 460 can be stuffed in there so I would imagine a BBC would fit pretty nicely...considering.
That light of a car a person could get away with a built TH350 and save the power/rotating weight.
As for the rear axle, Ford made that one simple and if I were you I would keep it simple. If your car doesn't have the 8.8 axle like the 5.0's, just get one of those. They seem pretty damned solid in those cars.

As to being light, a Mustang friend of mine was trying to tell me the 87-93 GTs weighed in at 3500 fully dressed..only the notchbacks were close to 3000. Is he right? I always thought they weighed less than that.

Valid point...the main reason I haven't ever used the 396 I have sitting in the shop. [tangent] I gotta find a spot to use that lil milll someday. Maybe go insane and rev the living hell out of it. [/tangent] However....he did say he was thinkin this because he knows of a complete and running 427 for sale.
