Default Newbie to the chebby engines...

Well my step dad just gave me a 63 Chevy C10 for Christmas, runs fine and all but needs a head gasket or 2 according to him. but me being the HP junkie I am I was thinking about upgrading or just making the current motor rip!

info i know about the truck is it has a late model 350ci motor, either a turbo 350 or 700 auto tranny. deffinatly needs a head gasket but runs fine the way it is.

Pics...

basically im think I may just do a head upgrade with a nice cam and be done with it but i want to weight my options. I dont know much about these engines or any possibilities. please educate me on my new found project...

What you need to do is find out the facts about the motor you already have.It may have a bunch of good parts in it already. You also want to determine how you want it to be as for driveability.A nasty motor with a big stall and 8 mpg may not be your thing for an everyday driver.

I would say a reliable 400HP combo on a decent stall will be fine, the Truck is deffinatly not a DD. but it is also not ever going to see a track! I know im going to mod the truck, more than likly the engine is still fine and just needs head gaskets but I have plenty of money to throw into the engine to make it better! I leaning towards a better set of budget heads, a nice cam and a stall to start me off. But like I said before im new the Chevy scene and the only experiance I have with Gm motors is my friends LS1 cars in which that are totaly different.

Also, a few websites where I can find parts for the engine would be great. I need to know what im looking at as far as price for a set of heads eithe rnew or used, cam and stall.

I do need help, I dont know crap about these engines, as for making it faster than my stang I ghihly doubt that this truck will ever hit low 13's N/A. even if it will I will never track it.

But I do need help extracting the power, im truly a idiot when it comes to these motors. and yes it is a 350ci chevy motor, 430hp and 400ft lbs sounds real good to me!

Basically im looking for a set of heads, I want to keep a decent street compression to run it on 93 octane. preferrably 10:1 or lower

a good street cam selection with a nice lumpy idle but yet very streetable. I love how the magic stick 3's sound in LS1 cars!!!

Stall will be the last upgrade once I figure out my engine combo.

check out Summit Racing they have every thing, I would go with an Eddelbrock top end kit that comes with heads, cam, intake, The Preformer RPM kit would be just fine for what you want to do

xpndbl3 hit the nail on the head. Good chance it's an 8.5:1 stocker. A set of vortec heads will flow a bunch better and jump the compression up a full point. Add a Performer RPM intake for Vortec heads and call it a day.

In 1996, GM put redesigned heads on truck engines. All were then called Vortec. 1996 - 2000 Small Block Chevy engines used this head. They are found on 1996 -1998 1/2 ton trucks, 1996 - 2000 2500 and Classic trucks, basically the old body style.

Heads from a 99+ Silverado are different and not interchangeable. 4.8L, 5.3L, 5.7L and 6.0L engines are the Gen III family. They do not even physically bolt to the block.

Alright, so if I get a set of Pre 99 heads of a SBC motor they will bolt right up to my Gen I 350 block and make real good power huh? do i use the same thickness headgasket on them as well?

I recommend pulling the stock heads and cleaning up the deck surface. Then, measure the depth that the pistons are below the deck. Once you have established that, get the thinnest head gasket you can to get the pistons within 0.040" of the head deck surface. That tighter quench volume will add a bit of power and detonation resistance, even though you are making the compution volume smaller.

Also, heads and exhaust bolt right up, but the intake manifold is Vortec specific. You will need either an Edelbrock or GM Vortec manifold to put it all together.

Good Luck!

Cool, im looking into an Eldelbrock right now and searching for a set of heads. My Step father pull a head yesterday and said it had some damage around one of the valves and 1 piston has been scratched. so I may be scraping the pistons as well in favor of some forged ones. or if there is more damage I will BBC it and be done with it.

it will eventually get a BBC, but I want to build it right before it goes in. until then It looks like it will get some Vortech heads, comp cam, edlebrock RPm intake and a good holley carb. I got a 700 tranny im going to beef up a little with a better stall and it need a little work. going to throw in a shift kit while im at it then the BBC build will begin. I have a block lined up already and possibly the roatating assembly as well.
