Default Cam Help

Hey guys.
I am thinking about saving up some money and getting a cam for my car in the spring. I was looking at a few of comp's cams and kits, and they look like they would make some good power. One problem is price though, since I'm a college student and I don't have money to throw around. I was looking at a cam in the .530"-.560" lift area with maybe around a 220s-230s duration. In looking at their kits, with all the parts including rocker arms it would come to something like $1,500. Lately I have been reading up on the GM Hotcam, and it actually sounds pretty decent, but I want to get your guys' opinions on it. At around $500 for the whole kit it seems like a great deal, and knowing all the parts fit together makes me feel good. Lol. Here are the specs on my car and the cam--

1984 Monte Carlo SS
ZZ4 with 750 Holley DP
3400 Yank Converter
3.42 Rear
Turbo 350C Trans

Just let me know if you guys need more info on the car.

And here's the Hotcam Specs-

218/228 @ .050
.525"/.525" lift with 1.6 rockers
lobe centerline 112 deg.

Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated, such as other cams or different parts or what have you. Thanks guys!

I just read this online...man this seems like a pretty good deal to me.

Special Note For ZZ4 Owners: This kit is worth 40HP more when installed in a ZZ4 which will boost the horsepower from 355 to 395, but the ZZ4 comes with the most of the LT4 HOT Cam Kit components already installed. The camshaft and lifters are all that are needed to complete the LT4 Hot Cam conversion on the ZZ4. The ZZ3 and prior versions of the ZZ4 will require the complete kit for the upgrade.

do you have the 1.6 roler rockers? your springs may not be what you need and you will also need a spider for the valey and retaining bars they can be bought new from gm or used on e bay

If you already have a ZZ4 crate motor, all that you really need are the roller rocker arms, valve springs, & a cam. Everything else is already in the motor from GM, if you have around 90,000 miles on the motor I would also install some new lifters.

Comp Cams part # 08-423-8 w/1.6 rockers lift will be .535"/.544" lift http://www.winnerscircleonline.com/C...meCamsPg1.html

This combo will net you more than 40 HP, but keep you at the same price.

Wow 1997bird...thank you! That's really helpful information. I have about 50,000 miles on the motor...do you think I need new lifters? And why did you choose the Scorpion rocker arms? Thank you again for the help and for the links. I really appreciate it.

The Scorpion rocker arms are stronger than the Crane Gold Billet rocker arms and have the same "Quick Lift Technology". But at the same time you are not paying for the name brand yet, that will change I'm pretty sure in the next few years. I would say that your lifters are fine right now as is. On the GM 350cid industrial engines that I build for some natural gas compressor's they are getting the equivilent of 528,000 hwy. miles on a low lift application before failure. For your performance application I would change them out at 100k.
