Default Can a mild 350 SBC w/ a 6-71 get decent gas mileage

Alright, before you laugh, heres what I'm thinking. I've got a mildly built sbc in my 55' bel air. Engine runs good and is fairly new. I've been torn between TPI on the engine and a big badass beautiful blower sticking out of the hood. Just like the damn cereal commercial, the adult in me wants to be responsible and since the car is driven in San Diego, the land of high gas prices, I should go the TPI route... But the kid in me really wants to **** off all the socal, tree hugging, green peace hippies by driving a badass old car with a 6-71 on the street. The car has a brand new 200-4r tranny, so I could keep the cruising speed on the interstate within reason. I'm not looking for the tire shredding power, just the badass look. I was thinking if I kept the pullies low, so it would only boost 5 lbs max, and with 2 smaller sized carbs on top (600's), as long as I kept my foot out of it, do you think I could still get decent gas mileage. By decent, I'm not asking for something in the 30's or 20's, but do you think something in the mid-teens would be do-able? Compression would be around 10:1, gearing I believe to be in the 3:42 range.

I think mileage would suffer compared to TPI, but not as much to make you regret the blower. also maybe look into a gear vendors overdrive underdrive system and possibly even a 3.08 gear.

Do you think the cost of the gear vendors unit would be worth the investment for me?

from what i've seen it would pay off in the long run, because you can overdrive it in every gear, significantly helping fuel mileage if your not beating the hell outta it. plus with the added torque from the blower you could easily go to the lower rear gear.

.

Never happen, it would be too much fun hitting it. Torque, sound, vibration. Never going to happen.
At least not possible for me. Good luck.

10:1 and a blower on the street won't live very long
Go 8.5-9.0 and 4-6psi and you can be happy
If you use a relatively mild cam, and SMALL carbs-like 450's or so and you INDEX THE POWER VALVES you can get decent mileage. With the 200-4R tranny, it had better be a good one!! If you run about 3.4-3.6 rear ratio, the overdrive auto will keep the RPM's in range.
Strongly recommend a small NITROUS cam from someone. I have done a lot of blowers and they like nitrous cams much better than the so called blower cams.
Key is the combination of compression, carbs with INDEXED POWER VALVES, and gear.

You do realize that with the stock pullies that come with the 6-71 (that is if it comes with a 38 tooth on the top and 34 on bottom) your boost would be 11.5 - 11.8 to 1. So your total compression would be around 17 to 1.?. That is a little too much for a mild 350 and that is too much or a blower for that engine.

I would definitely drop the compression down. I would also look into fuel injection for the blower. I am all about old school looks with a modern twist.
