Gents,
We can beat this discussion up all day long about rare, but the fact is 1996 and 1997 production SS cars are getting harder to find, just like anything else made in limited numbers. I own a '96 and for several years I have hawked eBay and craigslist nation wide to keep an eye on values and availability.

They are out there, and there are people taking great care of some of them, but you are going to pay a bit more when they do. The problem is it is becoming more difficult to find one in your area when you're looking. You can have a nice looking low mileage one shipped to you, but then like anything else, you're taking a chance.

Also, like any other muscle cars, people are modding them. When I looked last night, there were 3 '96 SS camaros on eBay for example. 2 of the 3 had been modded, one with a new instrument cluster. The unmodded one was advertised at $15.4 BIN, with a $14.9 starting bid. I think that will sit there for a long while at that price. Also, I think the general consensus is that sticks are more popular.

Lastly, if your car is missing things, they can become difficult to find. I spent a year and a half trying to find the right car cover and floor mats which were missing out of mine. My SLP sticker indicated they came with the car. Only problem is, in 1996, the cover and mats said Z28/SS on them. The only year they were like that (I think I've read of a few early '97's having them as well). Try finding those at a swap meet or on craigslist.

Either way, every time I think about getting rid of mine, I just can't. She turns twenty next year, so she'll no longer be a teenager.

Yeah they are rare, yes there are other more rare cars out there. As some have already stated, 96-97 SS have the lowest production numbers of any Camaro SS ever. Also 96-97 have different interiors so really each one was only made for 1 year. I own a 97 Camaro SS #1578 Bright Rally Red 6 spd. Leather T-Tops and if you look into production number break downs, (even with bright red being the most common color I believe) there are only 243 of my car. (97 Camaro SS Bright Red 6spd. T-Tops). That is rare. And if you take into account the different SLP options that these cars have, there will be far less of any one car (with the same color, interior, roof, trans.,SLP options etc.). So it is my opinion that these cars are rare, and my opinion is the only one that really matters. Just kiddin everyone but I do also wanna throw this out to all you 4th gen LS1 fan boys out there that like to trash talk LT1's constantly, you might have a few more horses, but I haven't been beaten by any LS1 (stock) yet and that includes several 98-02 SS's.My SS runs consistent 13.31's- 13.3x's and it's pretty much stock. (Aside from the SLP options; Hurst Short Throw Shifter, SLP 2OTL Exhaust, Oil cooler, Level 1 Suspension, and a couple little mods;Air Hog filter, TPIS Jet Foil, Throttle body coolant bypass, Silencer delete,UMI Short stick, and maybe a couple I'm not remembering but 13.31's all day and if any of you LS1 guys have a relatively stock car that runs better times that's awesome I don't doubt it but the way I look at it is at least my LT1 SS doesn't look like a Chrysler cirrus from the front or a catfish that got punched in the face 12 times.

No, but the front does look equally similar to a 1992-93 Geo Storm. Not sure that's any better.

They are available but in limited quantity search all of craigslist and autotrader and you might get a dozen or so....do the same for any other year or model camaro (besides special production cars) and I am certain you will find significantly more even 1st gen cars that have had 40+ years to scrap all the Junkers....I'm pretty sure it has been said quite a few times on this site but the lt1 SS cars had the lowest production of any standard model camaro

Regarding price ranges these cars aren't worth **** lol....you can pick up a pretty close to prestine example for under 10k.

Factor in the amount that have been totaled and or completely stripped of which I would probably estimate at 5% and it is definately driving the quantity of "original" clean cars down, not ones that have been completely ratted out with all the nostsalgia pieces removed by some kid

To be honest and not just because I have one but I arguee with all my LS friends that the LT1 SS is the best platform available for the money at the moment. You can get the rarity, looks, and all the options/perks of an SS on a stock 310 HP car with mid mileage for like $7-8k and honestly I have seen a lot cheaper. Throw on an LE2 package and your pushing 400 rwhp for under $10k and you still have a stylish rare car. The only LS1 SS your gonna get for under 10k is usual high mileage and has prob seen its better days.
If your just worried about performance though nothing beats an LT1 base model fbody (firebird/z28) they are just so cheap these days and you can find a lot that have already had tons of money sunk into them for cheap

There is a red 96 SS on CL in Georgia right now. Seats are worn, but otherwise it looks okay. The only thing I see missing are the wheels. It has a set of Y2K Vette wheels on it now.

How could you notice that did it say it in the ad ?

Although after watching a little harder you can see it had decent amount of passenger quarter damage and the whole front end was repainted.

I just saw it was a red D82 ttop with tan interior car that someone had spent decent amount of money on the engine and looked to be in pretty original shape

Pretty good price on this one as it seems very clean with the mileage:

I am definitely seeing a lot more pop up for sale for good prices....buyers market at this point.

Lol couldn't have said it better my self I bought the 96 SS SLP convertible over a 2002 SS SLP The 96 is so much nicer I could never sell mine I never find another one. there are millions of 98 to 2002 SS Camaros out there. The 96 SS SLP with the hood lid all SLP options O is it a blast to drive. mine adult owned F.L car always garaged 33K on it. I got the Artic White white top graphite leather T56 6 speed got weld wheels 104s on the way with Mickey Thompson 275/40/R17 going all the way around.
