Default 02 Firehawk Air Box Lid

Did all firehawks come with a SLP air lid? Or was it a option?

Depends when the car was built. After a certain point in production, the lids were made part of all 2002 Hawks. Mine was held up for a few weeks waiting on the "new" lid in July, August 2001 and in the end the car was shipped without it. I had the standard Trans Am lid with the baffles and air box behind it until very late December 2001 when SLP finally mailed me the right "345" HP lid which I had to pay for. Hence, because of SLP's ***** up, my SLP alteration sticker on my right door does not indicate the high performance air lid. Eventually, SLP put them on sale to the general public, so anybody could add one. I chucked the so called "high performance" paper filter from Blackwing in favor of my proven K&N filter, which is still there after nearly six years of use between my '98 Formula, '99 Trans Am and '02 Firehawk.

I was looking at a 2002, but I think it just had the pontiac ram air lid, so was the SLP one a option?

I bought my 'Hawk used. It was built Sept. '01 and it has the lid. I don't know if it was on the car from the factory or if they mailed the lid to the original owner afterwards.

I've got Firehawk No. 49 (2002) that was purchased September 25, 2001.
Obviously built earlier because the car sat on the car lot for about a month before I bought it. It did not have the air lid and at the time I bought it the transition to the SLP lid option was just happening. My air lid has functioned
just fine with the K&N air filter. I doubt there is any appreciable HP difference, however my car was listed at 335 hp. I hope it will make the car even more sought after later due to the limited production.

Later, Mark

Are you sure it was Dec or Jan? Mine is numbered 608. It seems odd that it would take 9 or 10 months to get from 526 to 608. It says right on the door Sept '01.

Sent to SLP 12/20 (closed til January for holiday) and completed at SLP 1/19/02 ??

I'll see if I can dig up the link on firehawk.org, but the Donaldson paper filter outflows the K&N by a tad bit

Plus, every time you wash a K&N, you lose a little bit of filtering capacity, since some of the foam will deteriorate and wash out. Donaldson had a line of washable filters awhile back that was far superior to K&N.

No, my car is an '02. Verified by vin # and carfax and when I called SLP to find the build number. Not to mention when I registered on Firehawk.org. Everything checks out. GM makes cars mid to late year and sells them as the following years models. Mine was built Sept '01 as an '02 model and has the blackwing lid.

I too am curious how you got #608 w/build date 9/01.......very strange, but if it checks out, COOL!

Good deal, and truthfully I do not think that too many ppl will deceive the general public considering the validation/verification process that is available.
Hmmm....I'll have to ask Dave Hamburger next time I see him.

I just had to look at Firehawk.org again to see my car listed. I will call SLP again to see if they give me the same build number that they did previously. The build date on the door is when GM made the car, but I doubt it took them forever to convert it. I KNOW it's an '02 'Hawk, but this thread has thrown a curveball at me!

Talking

Just called SLP on my lunch break. I got the build date wrong. I thought it was 09/01, but it was actually 12/01. While she was on the phone I was in the garage and the sticker said Dec.-
Back to the thread's original question: Dec '01 for sure has the Blackwing lid.

I dont have a hawk, but I do have the blackwing lid, and the quality is far beyond any of the other lids I've owned. The fit is excellent.
