Default Let's see your GPS units!

Exactly what the subject says. I'm looking into getting a portable GPS unit, so say what GPS you have and why you chose it.

I have an older model Garmin 680. I love it.

If I were to buy a new unit, I'd buy the Garmin 265wt. Its basically a newer version of the one I have and is the best combo of price and and features right now. Its $220 @ Amazon and $250 @ Costco.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=13430

Some highlights:
* Great Garmin Software
* nice size screen (3.81"W x 2.25"H)
* Touchscreen (most are now)
* Speaks Street Names
* Bluetooth
* SD Card Slot (for pictures, mp3s, poi, additional maps, etc.)

Garmin's higher models also have voice controlled operation and lane assist (tells you exactly what lane to be in with a diagram) but the prices of those units rise quickly above this unit.

I have a Magellen Explorist 600 that was rarely used if your interested...
http://www.thegpsstore.com/Magellan-...00-P646C2.aspx
I have everything including the box I believe. I even have the MapSend software that goes with it. Make me an offer. The unit is $300 and the software is $60 new.

Just didn't need it like I thought I did... I also have a Garmin car style and before it a Magellan car style, is probably why it never got used.

Not sure if I will get flamed or not.. but I use the Verizon VZW navi quite a bit.. it's actually done better than most of my friends stand-alone GPS's, I used it driving from Ohio to MD, DFW to Austin, etc.. might be worth looknig into if your cellphone contract is up soon and it's never led me wrong yet :shrug:

On rare occasions that I do use a gps, i use magellan roadmate 800.

Very reliable, i brought it to a cabin trip to Maine just in case. After the rental car's gps gave up, this thing found the way in basically the woods.

Get your Flame suite on...jk

But seriously, most cell phone that provide gps functionality use cell phone towers to provide the service. If you are in the city or close to it, it works great.

My experience of going out of state: there has been miles of range where I had no cell phone service, hence no gps because the maps and gps location is based on the cell phone's ability to get service from the network.

For example: windows mobile phones that have the physical gps chip(sirf star) and maps stored on any type of sd card works good imo, because it connects to satellites like traditional gps.

I dislike verizon and sprint because they have phones manufactured for them and don't use sim cards like the rest of the world. If one looses/breaks their phone in contract , one 'd better hope to find a freind with a spare compatible phone or buy them used from a stranger on portals like ebay or craigslist and hope they work the next day.

I have a G1 cellphone that use's actual satellite's not the cell phone towers. I LOVE it! Downloaded an app that shows real time speed, trip, and tons of other data and I have checked it against 3 different cars and it is right on the money. Only thing I want hanging off my window is a radar detector.
