Default where is the "exciter" wire on the alternator?

I'm brining it to a friend today he's the one who did the "big 3" I just didnt get the alternator. I just replaced the battery with another yellow top and my battery voltage is still at 12 volts. I have a feeling that the exciter wire may have came loose or it never was tightened down.

Looks like this and it goes plugged in on top of your alternator.
