Default Python alarm w/ viper smartstart

Trying to get educated on alarms systems so bare with me...
I want to get the viper smartstart system so I can start my 99 TA with my iPhone but am having trouble with a couple of questions. I've read that python alarms are pretty much the same as viper since they are built by the same company just different badging and without the higher price tag associated with the viper name. So if that is correct then what would be the cheapest python alarm I could buy that would be compatble with the viper smartstart?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm assuming you have to buy a viper/python alarm before the smartstart will work. Also I want to do the install myself.

I figured ls1tech would be the best place to start getting my facts straight.

you also have to pay a monthly service fee to use the remote start with your phone.

I was looking at Viper's Smart Start also.

This page mentions the compatible systems depending on which module you get.
Some are Alarm & Keyless Entry Only while others are keyless entry, remote start & alarm.

The cheapest Remote Start compatible with the Smart System module is the Viper 5101.
At other online vendors you can get the same unit for half the price what viper sells it for.

Found out that there's a stand alone unit that can interact with phone/blackberry/Android.

2 Stand Alone Systems:
VSS3000 - Keyless Entry , Remote Start
VSS500 - VSS3000 Features + security

You wouldn't need to buy an alarm/remote start with key fobs + Smart start Module.
In case your battery runs out on the phone, the physical door key is always with you.

Just in case you are interested, alternative to viper smart start is Audiovox Carlink.

Yep, you would use your dataplan. Its almost as same as sending a email.
But for some features, viper also requires a seperate subscription.

Possible bad install?

Besides this issue, how did the phone app work out for you being used as the "key fob"?
