will an amp help me?
I have a factory monsoon system that is not so monsoon. The p/o had the radio warrentyed @ the dealer. I looked & didnot see an amp in the usual places. There is no way this system is amplified.
I like the factory setup b/c I can leave the car w/ the top up or down & I don't have to worry. I never lock the doors b/c they would just cut the top.
If I get a small/medium 4 channel amp do they have a input/output to use my ipod direct w/o a fm transmitor and what is a good amount of watts to power the 4 6.5 aftermarket speakers no box or anything crazy? Thanks Brian.

As far as I know there aren't any amps with inputs for an iPod. That's usually the head unit. So you would need a differenter head unit to use it. Aftermarket head unit would also have more power than the stock one but not much; usually around 20 rms per channel. A good mids and highs amp would be much better for the speakers. See what rms the speakers are rated for then choose an amp with similar power rating.

there is an adapter that plugs into the factory radio cd changer input (on the back of the factory radio) that will give you an RCA input then get an rca to 3.5mm headphone cable, it won't keep your ipod charged but will let you run ipods or any other mp3 player or hell even a laptop computer sound into your factory radio. but if I remember right its atleast like 70 bucks (bit pricey for what you get).
no idea where the stock monsoon amp(s) are tucked in a vert (if it is monsoon then there is definately an amp somewhere) but you could put more powerful amps in to get the system louder, but you will get better sound with a decent aftermarket radio.

Any amp will work with an iPod if you get the 3.5mm to RCA cord from RadioShack or even Walgreens has them IIRC. I'd recommend the Alpine MRP-F300 because it has the high level inputs you'll need built in. So youd wire the factory deck to the high level in and use the iPod cord with the rcas and just turn off the head unit when using iPod and unplug iPod when using deck. You'd need to wire up an "override" trigger switch for the amp
