iPad Air Radio Bezel
***No longer going this route. Decided to install a Samsung Tablet. Follow the build here:

Well I decided to change out my iPad mini dash mount for a full size iPad. I just finished the renderings in Autodesk Inventor. I could just send these off and get them CNC cut but that is very pricy. So instead I'll make it from fiberglass and bondo like my first version for the mini.
The whole front will be motorized to come out of the dash only two inches allowing the iPad to be slid out towards the passenger. Then the linear actuator will retract the bezel back into the dash.
Behind the ipad the HVAC controls and CD player will set stationary. Also the "trans Am" lettering is made out of red lexan in the rendering, to place leds behind and light up. If I end up getting this thing CNC'd I can do this but I can't do this at home
So here are some pics:

I'll try to get some pics this evening before I started messing with it. Basically for it I had to disassemble the HVAC controls and mount them individually in order to fit them and the iPad in the stock opening.

Ok I wanted to revive this since I found a way to make a CNC machine for myself. So I will be able to do some very intricate work. If anybody is interested check out the shapeoko CNC machine for around $650 dollars.
With that said I think I'm just gonna do a iPad mini again. So this is my prototype and the HVAC control will be hidden behind the iPad again. What do you think?

I have considered 3D printing. But I have found a way to make a CNC router for around $600. I got a quote for the first version to CNC it, it would be close to $500 for a one off. Makes sense to me just to start building my own CNC machine to make just about anything I want.
I'm always wanting brackets and custom pieces like this so time to invest in something I can use over and over.

And for those without the ears to hear the difference most cellphones suck for music playback so Ipads and certain Samsung tablets (and a few other tablets with the right DAC) provide EXCELLENT sound quality to your HU or other alternative. Also you get the added benefits of a Navigation unit that doesn't use crappy proprietary maps (cough Pioneer cough) and let you use Google Maps and any of the MANY other NAV apps and can be done at a fraction the cost of the average Double Din NAV HU.

I have always a a DVD player in just about every car I have had. I do not carry cd's because I download MP3 and they are around 320Kbps. Don't get me wrong CD quality is amazing but I haven't paid for a CD since I was in middle school. Main reasoons for an iPad are.
-Bigger screen than any double din head unit (7.9")
-Better resolution than any head unit
-Google Maps
-Thousands of MP3's
-And lets not forget movies and TV Shows (you'll be surprised how easy it is to drive and watch)
-Push notifications(sports center, facebook)
Basically what I use now is a Alpine bluetooth head unit and plug the ipad in via the cable and my iPhone automatically syncs to the headunit via bluetooth once I get in the car. Then if I have a phone call or text or anything really on my phone. The head unit pauses the iPad, then when I end the call or the notification goes away the music resumes. Which is very nice...

I always liked looking at the Nexus 7 installs on the XDA Developers forums. One guy did a Trailblazer and did an awesome job of it. He used it with a DAC and a portable hard drive via USB and had all the steering wheel controls and everything working on it. It was pretty slick.
