Default Installed Autometer shift light Having problems>>

The shift light will flash when you turn the key on, so I know it should work. The problem is that no matter which rpm pill I put in it, the light will not flash. I was told to tap into the whit wire on the black pcm plug. Is this right? What else can I try??? Help.

I do not have an Autometer light but rather an MSD so I realize different companies are gonna have different schematics for their products. But for comparison: my light's RPM input wire goes to the coil's negative terminal for signal. If you have an MSD ignition, it will have a tach output connector on it.
