Dual Voice Coil 6" Subwoofer
One of my subs has blown and I want to replace both of them. I don't want to put new amps in or rewire my car since I spend so little time in it but enjoy a good sound. I don't want to pay to get GM OEM Monsoon speakers when I know that they are not the best quality and expensive. Since they are 2 ohm DVC I haven't found any replacements that just plug in.
I spoke with the Image Dynamics and they said that they used to make a DVC 6" sub but stopped because the demand wasn't high. The guy said that he still has all the parts to make them and he would make a DVC custom if I wanted.
Here are the specs of the speakers I want modified. Let me know what you think.
Image Dynamics CX62
Voicecoil single 2 ohm
Nominal Impedance (IMP) 2 ohm
DC Resistance (Re) 1.8 ohm
Sensitivity (Spl) 91 dB
Recomended Power 150 watts
Frequency Response 45Hz - 4kHz in door
Overall Dia. 6.625"
Depth 3.125"
Mount Dia. 5.625"
Magnet Dia. 4.5"

The stock Monsoon speakers in the Camaro are single voice coil 2-ohm. The stock speakers in Firebirds are 4-ohm DVC (wired seperately from amp). So it doesn't pay to have them modded. Besides, if your thinking of 2-ohm DVC wired in parallel (effectively 1 ohm load), you'll likely burn up your amplifier.
I have CX62's on backorder. And I'm thinking of cancelling and getting somethings else as I'm tired of waiting for them dealer to get them from the factory.
Right not, the alternatives under consideration are: Pioneer TS-M7PRS, or Audiobahn AMD60Q.
These are 4-ohm and 3-ohm respectively. But both have better freq response than the CX62's with high efficiency. The Pioneer are a bit more $$. The Audiobahn's can be had for almost half the price of the CX62's.

Actually, it has more to do with Sensitivity. A 4 ohm speaker with 92dB sensitivity, should sound as loud as a 2 ohm speaker with 89dB sensitivity. The Sensitivity rating (sometimes shown as Efficiency Rating) is the sound level measured at 1 meter in front of the speaker with 1 watt of power applied.
THe Audiobahn's claim an Efficiency of 93db (best I've seen on any speaker). So I'd expect them to be the loudest of all the available speakers, even the 2 ohm CX62's.
Louder isn't necessarily better. I don't want to drown out my other speakers.

Yeah but some brands will do things to make the sensitivity ratings a lot higher then they really are. Kind of like dyno tricks.
Your right. In theory you should gain +3 db when you cut your ohms in half (essentially doubling your power) but this is not always the case.

Your also right about the difference between theory and reality. Just because a speaker is 2-ohm, doesn't mean it is necessarily twice as loud (or even as loud) as a 4 ohm speaker at the same volume level.
I'm not an audio expert, so alot of the small detail speaker parameters often escape my grasp of comprehension. But as an electrical engineer, I do have a pretty good handle on what watts, meters, and deciBels are. lol
