Question What aftermarket speakers to go with??? How hard are they going to be to install?

i have a 02 SS that i want to upgrade the factory speakers in for christmas.

i dont want cheapos but i dont need the most expensive stuff on the market either.

i already have a aftermarket head unit Alpine 9883.

ive called several stereo places and all ive called says that all kinds of stuff has to be changed if i replace the factory speakers. they said if i didnt eliminate the factory amp then id have really really low volume even if its all the way up and other stuff like that.

come on stereo guys let me know what ya think id like to do the install by myself.

You can replace any part of the system you want separately. HU, amp, or speakers. None require the others to be done, though doing all of them is of course the best.

What kind of budget are you talking about? Not cheap but not expensive is a little vague.

If you're planning to do the doors and the sail panel speakers while retaining the Monsoon amp then you can get some really good sound with stuff from Kee Audio. To really do it right will cost about $400 but he has less expensive options as well.

Well, Ian (Kee Audio) has decent coax speakers for the doors for under $100 per pair. They are fairly easy to modify for use as components. His CDT 6.5" coaxial component speakers are drop-in replacements that sound great (I have them) but they're twice the price. The CDT midbass speakers for the sail panels are $200 but they also drop right in. You can use the eD 7kv.2 subs (formerly EU-700) in the sail panels but they require a spacer for mounting and you have to wire the two voice coils in parallel to get the 2-ohm impedance that matches stock. They're only $130 per pair but they're currently backordered until mid-January.

Shoot Ian at Kee Audio a PM. I ordered door, sail, and rear hatch speakers from him for my 02 SS and couldn't be happier.

What were all the speakers that you ordered?

Do we need to stick with a 3/4" tweeter for the components in the doors?
I guess what I am asking is the 3/4" tweeter the drop in size and if we went bigger or smaller we would have to do some modifications?

The actual physical size of the stock tweeter is about 1 5/8" so you can put a pretty large tweeter in there. Your major obsticle is depth which IS about 3/4". 3/4" to 1" is a good size for a tweeter although I will be trying CDT's new midtweeter which is really cool. It's a 2" tweeter that acts like a midrange. I will be modifying the tweeter area to fit these in place but effectively will be making a 3-way comp set for my doors without the use of kick panel enclosures. I will be using CDT's Upstage-222 imaging tweeters mounted in the A-pillars facing the windshield.
Here's a picture of the ES-02 midtweeter:

A 2" tweeter is going to be far too directional for anything other than ear-level. 1" tops.
