Default Monsoon MP3 Head unit *pic*

Does anyone know what compatibility the newer monsoon mp3 head units have with the older style? Wiring harness plug, etc.. Someone in my family just got an 04 Grand am and it's got the 1.5 DIN Monsoon that plays mp3s. Red led's and all. Would be a nice alternative for those who want mp3's and retain factory appearance.

That really looks like the same dimensions as the older Monsoon. Anyone have more info?

aint exactly gonna work. let alone are the plugs not the same, all the newer gm's use the databus line or whatever they call it to turn the radio on. there is no +12v ignition wire the computer tells it when to turn on so right there you are out of luck

There is a post around here, where somebody did that, and it worked for him! Although is a double din, and he had to create a custom bezel.

Ill just tell you guys right now like i stated ealier. Most GMs made after 99 or so some a little earlier (other then fbodys) do not have a 12volt ignition wire to turn on the radio. the computer sends it a signal to turn on so basically there is no way to make it turn on because it gets the signal from the pcm or something like that.

a 12 volt signal will turn it on though, we have a newer chevy truck radio on display at work, wired to a 12 volt lead. It can work.

I remember that one. It turns out that the Vibe was one of the last models to switch to the new electronics in their head units so the wiring was not much of a problem. But the 6-disc indash changer doesn't support MP3s.

I would be interested if I didn't already have MP3 capability. I bought the GMaux-9 for my car and it works great, at least for connecting mp3 players, now if you are talking about mp3 cds, then thats a different story

Yeah, for some reason GM decided that if you had the 6-disc in-dash changer you didn't need to play MP3 CDs. Only their single CD head units (and nav units) can play MP3 CDs.

It's still Double-DIN, not 1.5 DIN.

I think I would rather hood and adapter up and play and aux source like an ipod instead of having to modify the dash for the double din.

It's a shame that there isn't another Pontiac radio with MP3 compatibility that is easily swapped in That picture linked above made me drool...

X2
or at LEAST an aftermarket head unit that has our display color AND is steering control compatible - is that asking too much? After 15 years?
