Default New HU is staticy...

I recently replaced my monsoon hu with a new one and this is the deal...
When the volume is at 0 or muted there is a staticy sound (probably there all the time but only noticeable at low volumes) When I turn the volume up or down anywhere between 0 - 5 my speakers kinda go out for just a split second and kinda pop a little bit... after i turn it up past like 5 it doesnt do anything weird really anymore except if u really listen there is still some static, if the song is quiet or something at the time...

Any ideas on whats up? Should I maybe just bypass the monsoon amp? Im assuming thats whats causing the problem... And if so, how would i go about doin that?

It's doubtful that the amp is causing the problem. When you say you replaced the head unit with a new one, do you mean an aftermarket one or a used factory one? Because my first guess would be that the rheostat of the volume control is shot - that could cause both the noise and the intermittent operation. Sometimes, spraying contact cleaner (or TV tuner cleaner) from Radio Shack around the volume control will clear up the problem.
