Yay Traffic!!
So I'm sittin in the turn lane to get on the interstate to go to work earlier, not really paying attention to my surroundings, when I hear this shitty rev and see a yellow 95ish stang going the other way, and 2 cars behind me was a black late model 2nd gen camaro, which reved in reply. At this point I paid attention and got excited because the 2nd gen was gettin on the interstate too and sounded modded.
We hit the interstate and we both immediately gun it till we're blocked by some trucks, we get around them and hit a straight 3 mile open stretch and play follow the leader to like 130, but didn't really race, at which point we line up and cruise side by side till our respective exits. The other dude seemed happy to run into another f body in a city overrun by mustangs and ricers, as was I.
Moral of the story? A stock M6 LT1 can just barely hang with a mildly modded (assuming) 2nd gen. And also Camaro owners are just plain cool because they don't just rev like an *** in traffic and don't back it up like some other car groups we all know.

yeah, late 70s second gens, especially camaros are turds. Even the almighty 455 pontiac only had ~ 220hp in 1976 and the 400s of 77-79 were ~ 200. I can only imagine the 350s of the same era were less than 200hp.

Twas the dark ages of horse power men, we need not look back at such things.
Thast why you build it better than stock, i had a 79 Z28, the stock motor was not in for very long. Now, the lowly powered 455 was sad, but still made more torque than any LT1/LS1 cam with from the factory, so out of the hole was a blast.

Most of those older Camaros don't even have a Highway rear end/ tranni gear to keep up with you. He must have had a late model drive train.

didn't the late 70's engines come with very low compression pistons around 8.5 compared to the early 70's when the compression was around 10.5-10.75? and the emissions laws when gas had a shortage made them less powerful and less gas hungry, those poor 454 & 400s being deprieved of gas

My old mans got a '78 Z28 4-speed and I know those cars don't have the ***** the 70 1/2's to 73's had because of the low compression, but they're not really as slow as one would think.
Back in 1980ish the car consistently ran 14.6's with only factory 3.73's and Mr Gasket Longtubes while on crappy bias ply tires.
Not sure what it'd run now but its got an 800cfm Holley double pumper, Edelbrock intake manifold, decent size Crane camshaft (22X/23X .45X/.45X), and better street tires.
I know with the mods on my 4th gen I've run consistent low 13's and the old man's car hangs right with me.

Forgot to add, I had a break from work around 7pm that same day and did some pointless crusin through downtown and saw the guy again hangin out infront of a bar talkin to some folks about his car it looked like. It reminded me of that scene in Dazed and Confused with wooderson and his famous quote.

sounds like you two had fun. When the LT1's first came out, a friend of mine bought one and after a catback and tire change to sticky summer only tires we dig raced against my '78 Z28:
'72 350 truck engine, 9.0 to 1 compression
'78 350 heads w/ 3 angle and lightly ported (stock 1.9x valves)
232/234 @ .050" dur., .488" lift cam (.522 lift with 1.6 rockers roller rockers) with Rhoads lifters
Victor Jr. intake and Holley Winston Cup West 750cfm holley dbl pmpr
MSD HEI distributor with 6A box
Summit LT headers and true duals
3.42 posi w/properly dialed in slapper bars on a '82 Z28 rearend w/ springs and sway bar
Koni 90/10 front shocks w/ V6 front springs and swaybar
Lightened to 3420lbs wet (when it was a auto)
Shift kitted stock stall Turbo 350
Lots and lots of little things... like got rid of the power steering by going to a modified rack n pinion of a ?vega?, tossed vacuum brake setup and installed a manual brake conversion...
Anyways, after he learned how to properly race ( I DESTROYED him the first couple dig runs due to him spinning and launching late) we ended up neck and neck on our last run, with the bastard just edging me in a later impromptu run by a fender- a downhill race that benefited his heavier car. he never would race me again after that win. lol

Haha here we are thirty years later say ppssshhh... 200 horse power is nothing. Makes me wonder if in thirty years they will look back and say
"do you remember the 300HP LS1. That poor motor need some real gas. It only ran like 10.5:1 compression..."
