Default Learned something about gear selection tonight...

Hi guys,
Been awhile since I posted here. Here's the spec on my car: '02 WS6, PRC stage 2.5 5.3L heads, PatG spec'd cam, LTs & ory through a magnaflow catback, Textralia OZ700 x-grip.

I learned it is important to choose the right gear when going from a roll tonight.

I'm driving down the highway and a red civic pulls up along side me. I hear him downshift so I grab second. I give him the go, and open up the LS1. At 130 I let off, and he does the ricer fly-by. I had him by a few cars (I wasn't counting).

We slow down to 60ish to go again. I give him the hit again, only this time like an Idiot I stay in third. This time I can't reel him in. He had me by a car length.

I think it's time for a 9" and 4.11s It felt good to run the bird even if I did screw up the second race.

That sucks. It hurts even more that it was a Civic. I did that once against a GT (didn't downshift to 1st). Fortunately I was able to reel him back in and put a few on him by 3rd.

Don't sweat it. It happens to the best of us. Ok...no it doesn't...but I'm trying to be positive.

I agree with Jason. This is a good learning experience. I bet you won't do that again!

I was shocked when I was cruising around with my buddy and found out he never downshifted...just hit it from whatever gear he was in. I learned him real quick.

Yep, gear selection is crucial, if its not where you want it slow down or speed up.

That really sucks man, its happened to me too. ONCE!! I started in 2nd at about 30-35 against a LS1 Trans Am. Lets just say what could have been a drivers race, was a drivers race, sadly. I messed up and he won. Good luck next time. At least you got him once and he got you once. 50/50

He is probably going to tell all his civic buddies that he beat a trans am and everyone with a civic is going to worship him for that...

Part of me hopes he does tell his Civic buddies. There's a guy with a black one that I would love to line up with.

I've only had a couple of races on the highway myself. first time was against a modded/CF'd out sti, same situation.. 60 and I go in 3rd he only managed to put 1 car on me tho by the top of 3rd wher we both let off.
second time was against a 6.0 GTO @ 60, this time he stayed in 3rd but I went to 2nd and instantly put a car on him and held him ther to the top of 3rd. both races were before internal work btw. like these guys said it happens to all of us at one point or another. good kill, but not really a nice death it was a honduh after all..

Don't sweat it! You know your car is faster (first race) the second was just fooling around!

Perfect example.

Ran into a modded GTR R35 with the HKS570 @ 560awhp. (Pump Gas) Cool guy, older dude but actually races his car!

Anyways, he kept wanting to go from a 40-45mph roll. (I KNOW that car is a beast down low and you would never want to race one if not @ 50-60mph... that 1-2-3 gear shifts keeps that car up ahead of he got the jump, fast cars to 100mph, don't let your guard down!) Anyways, First run was with me in 2nd around 3600rpms (not sure but a tad low) The Z06 moves out BUT that GTR will be in his powerband and yank. So, we went with me in 2ND and he got about a car jump. I hit 3rd (91mph) and start to creep.... hit 4th (125mph) and start to come back. He let off so that was a win for him.

I was pissed so we went again (We raced a billions times after this.. fun!) BUT with me in 1ST this time. (4500rpms+) We went and blamo, DOOR-TO-DOOR! Slammed 2nd and we are right there.. top of 2nd it would seem that I was getting a move. Hit 3rd and start to move.

So, yes, gear selection is VERY, VERY important! I love it when I line it up and the other guys says a "2ND gear roll!" I always respond with "What MPH, you pick your gear, I'll be in mine" The Z06 has tall gears so a 2nd @ 40mph is not optimal... but at 60-65mph its nutz!

You have to be well aware of what you are racing against, how that car shifts and what roll would be "their" roll. Select your gear accordingly and hope you have enough!

I will be back in Keokuk quite a bit this summer and would love to come lay waste to some Civics!

That's the one! Let me know when your back in this area, so we can go hunting...

Killemall: The dyno sheet says 410 @ the wheels. However, I have been told their dyno read low. I'm not making excuses, that's just what I heard.

Will do man...I think that is the same civic that got my buddy's black Mach 1 from a 35 roll, at the time it was just a exhaust, tune car now it has full bolt ons and a 150 shot so we need to get back up there and play, I'll make sure to let you know but I will defintely be back several times this summer probably here in a few weeks and definitely for the weeked of Steamboat Days.

I think i'm missing something. 3rd gear @ 60ish is about right isn't it? I'd imagine 2nd gear would slow you down since you'd have to shift in like 9 mph.

that civic must have some major work done to keep up with a H/C ls1 from a 60 pull.

Well, that depends on the car. My car 60 mph in 3rd gear is way to low.
