Default 02 SS gets the WIN light over the 03 COBRA

Hey guys,
I'm still kinda pumped up from handing a 03 Cobra its *** at the track today. I've been reading lots of posts and seen them around but I haven't had the opportunity to run one, until tonight... muhuheeheehahahaha

So I go to OSW tonight, its packed as hell. The tech guy tells me I can't run in lane 1 or 2 cause I need a helmet. Gahh Apparently they're getting strict about running helmets now, anything 13.99 or faster and you need a helmet. So the tech guy tells me I can run in lanes 3.4.5. He told me if I hit a 12 they'll either warn me or tell me to go home.

I said screw it, I'm gonna keep my foot in it and if they kick me out, then so be it.

So anyway back to the story I go to lane 5, I'm behind a nice red 03 Cobra. I'm like yea, alright, cool! I park and get out and walk up to the guy immediately and ask him if he wants to run me, he asks what I'm driving and said "ahh that orange Camaro" He obliges. ITS ON..

I go and lower the air pressure in the drag radials and start psyching myself up for the race. I checked his car out, (while he wasn't around) and noticed he had a cold air kit, and a exhaust. The pulley looked stock, he might have had a chip. Best thing was that he was on street tires. BIG Disadvantage for him..Advantage for me I knew he probably had more power so I said to myself its all in the 60 foot. I visualized the race going down in my head, annihilate him from the start and never look back. I wanted to not just beat him, but beat him bad.

Its like an hour or so till we get to run, some guy in a VR4 broke his differential and instead of just stopping and pulling off to the side, the dumbass drives all the way down the track leaving fluid the whole way down... I keep rehearsing the race again and again in my head how I want it to go down.

Finally the lanes start moving. Its getting colder by the minute, I decide to let a couple more pounds of air out of the tires to make sure I hook decent. I want to win...

Fast forward to prestaging, I do a long burnout to get the tires sort of warm. I dry hop to test the traction out, not good , so I do another short burnout. Now it feel different. The Cobra prestages and stages. He's ready to go. I'm trying to make sure I'm in the groove. Finally I inch up to the line and prestage. I check to see if everything's ok, heater's off, traction control off. etc. I am friggin ready.

I stall her up to about 1800rpm , the front end is lifting the rearend is starting to sit down from preloading the suspension, the starts starts the tree and the ambers start coming down. I'm counting down, I'm nervous, I don't want to fawk it up on the tree. I leave on the third amber, let go of the brake and the car lurches forward. Yea baby I tree'd him(my .679 to his .715) I'm off, by accident I smacked the shifter down to first, OH SHEEEET!! Throw back in Drive before it hits second, I'm way pulling pretty hard and pulling away pretty easily. The launch felt great! This was my first time on drag radials in my car, I likem! I glanced next to me real fast to see where he was, he was behind me by about 5 cars. The tach spins up to 6 grand and the trans shifts into D. At this point I'm looking around and thinking ok he's gonna catch me and pull me on the top end. NOPE NO siree he is behind WAYYYYYYYYYYY behind me. An easy 8 cars. My car felt really strong on this pass. I knew it was a 12 but I was only expecting a 12.70.

I cross the line and I'm F'n psyched. I waxed a 03 Cobra! The best thing about it is my car is mildly modified too. SCHWEET!

Well I turn off and head up to the shack where you get your slip. The people there are kinda looking at me funny. I'm like umm did I do something wrong. The older guy was getting a message thru his headphone. He asked me if I had a helmet, I said ummmm no. He's like you gotta have one, do you know how fast you went?? I said umm no why. He's like look at your slip..
12.54 @ 109 mph I'm like in total shock.. I can't believe it. The older guy says to me well I'm sorry you're running way too fast without a helmet, I'm sending you home. Ah well. It was worth it.

The best thing about it was I still have more potential, my 60 foot was only a 1.8 and my car had a half tank of gas in it. Imagine if I came with less gas and cut a better 60'.

That's my story, I'm winding down and gonna hit the hay. I think I need a beer or something.

Sorry So LOOOONG!

Nice kill! Did you happen to get his 60'? He must have been spinning out or just gave up. Like you said... It's all in the 60'

12.54 @ 109? You sure the Cobra wasn't stock? I can run that in reverse.

This one is on it's way to the Drag Racing forum...

It had a intake and exhaust. He ran 13.2 @ 113.89

He cut a 2.3 60 foot.

so much for your reverse theory...

I said I can run that in reverse. Lack of traction is a bitch. He shouldn't have come to the track unprepared (no DR's). His problem, your win.
He needs some driving lessons too.

Actually, that's not all that uncommon. Mostly because many '03/'04 Cobra owners are first time Mustang guys like myself. It took me a while to figure the car out too. It picked up tons of ET/mph after it was fully broken in too. It's still pretty embarrasing though.

I was at the track once last year and I was having problems with my chip. I just hit 2nd gear and the car quit making boost. I ran a whopping 13.3 @ 101mph. I was expecting mid 11's back then. I tucked my tail between my legs and went home. Fortunately the problem has been resolved.

Shoot, look at the awful times Hot Rod TV was clocking for their infamous Cobra Vs Sti episode. I saw a guy this week put down a 12.3 with exhaust work only, so they ARE monsters once run well. Congrats on the kill!

Miami. The gateway to the 3rd World... If you can put up with millions of Spanish and Portuguese speaking people and dare venture down, I'll show you around.
