93 z28 vs 351 fox body Ok so a guy I work with has a friend with a 1990 fox body.. He said it had a built 351 Windsor... Had headers with H pipe into dumped flowmasters, head work, ported intake, bigger carb, cam, 3.73's and a 5 speed. Also the car is gutted! I know these cars are light anyway so now it doesn't have any interior.. Anyways he wanted to race me.. I have a 93 z28 M6 bone stock except for a Moroso cold air intake. my car also has stock 3.23's. So we go from a 20 roll.. Right off the bat I jump out at least a car on him and about 3/4 of the way through 3rd we are about nose to nose and he starts barely inching by.. Then we both let out.. All in all it was fun... I will be getting 4.10's soon and will be getting headers. Then I'll run him again :) |
good run. Sounds like you should have the win no problem after the next couple mods. |
Don't put 4.10's in it. If your car has 3.23's you have a shorter 1st and 2nd gear than a 3.42 car would. Do 3.73, that would give you a great launch ratio and still drive out the back hard. You will out run him with 3.73's. |
sounds like a good race. that is a poor example of a gutted 351 car. given its weight it prob makes what 260 whp? i agree with the 373 gears. i had 410s in my lt1 car and it ran out of breath real quick 4th gear. i spun away any advantage i may have had at low speeds. |
Good race! Perfect example of why a race is worth doing, even if it's one sided on paper. |
Thanks guys! This is the first time I've raced this car since I've had it.. They have talked that mustang up ever since they first told me about it.. The guy was surprised how close the race was.. I don't know why a stock 5.0 fox body would be faster than my car like someone said earlier that a 5.0 should get the win when the 93 cobra and 93 z28 had a shoot out when they first came out.. And we all know the z28 out performed it all around.. Anyways didnt mean to bring that up after 20 years.. Thanks for compliments guys and I will be getting gears soon. |

FWIW many moons ago I massacred my friends cam+bolt-on 95 Cobra with my mild bolt-on 93 auto. It was messy... Oh and BTW, 93's have a more aggressive M29 close ratio transmission so the advice to go 3.73 may be worth thinking about. Your first gear will be useless with 4.10s. |
Sounds like he put stock 302 heads on a 351 and called it good, lol. Good race. |
I had 4.10's in my lt1 and loved them. If you have a tire that hooks you can use the torque and jump out hard. |
you must have deep pockets for cash...dont know how your able to afford gas for 2 V8's... lol |

It wasn't even a competition stock for stock in 93. There is the shootout article floating around the internet still.
