Default Finally got to race a 5.0

On my way home from work, I came up behind a new gt 5.0. I came up beside him, slowly driving past and he downshifts and flies past. Immediately I downshift to 3rd and follow suit till we come up to some traffic.

We both ease past the traffic ahead to a small clear spot and I pull to the right of him and downshift to 2nd gear at 60. As soon as I'm about to start the 3 honks, he just takes off and I'm playing catch up again. I get almost even with him when we had to brake for more traffic ahead.

There was no more room for racing as we were coming into town and he pulled into the turn lane to head to a gas station. I follow him in and we get to talking. His car is a 2014 5.0 with the track pack (3.73 gears) and an exhaust. I told him what was done to mine and he said he definitely thought mine was faster than regular bolt on ls1's because he usually pulls pretty hard on them and I "kept up" .

So I proceeded to tell him I was about to honk it off when he jumped me and I'd like to get a straight race with him. He followed me out of the gas station and gets in the left lane. We're both in first gear and as soon as I honk once he hits it - I just shifted into 2nd and didn't go since he jumped so hard again. He hits his brakes when he sees I didn't go. I come up next to him still in 2nd gear and show him my 3 fingers to make sure he knows to go on the 3rd honk.

Finally a clean race... I honk 3 times and we both take off from second gear. I immediately started pulling on him, hit third gear and pulled a couple more cars before we let off. He stayed back for a bit and we kept driving normal till we passed through an intersection and had more open highway ahead.

On the 2nd race, we both started in 2nd at about 50 and I honked it off again. I pulled about 5 cars on him up to 130 when I let off.

I really wish I could've heard my exhaust from his point of view, I can only imagine how the screaming sounded as I pulled away and his heart sank again from the molestation he was receiving...

He said his car ran a 12.8 bone stock (before exhaust? Idk) and trapped a highest of 117 (I call bs). He said he trapped like 110 on his 12.8 run with deflated tires - that sounds more on point. All in all, the 5.0 is a hard running car out of the box.

I need to invest in a gopro..

Thanks! Unfortunately I'm running on a mail order tune still - I imagine I'm leaving decent power on the table.

He could only hang if he jumped me lol. Yeah, I wish he wouldn't have jumped from the 1st gear roll, it would have just got worse.

Oh I see. Yeah I know the mail order is far from optimal, Frost did a pretty good job with it being a high compression built motor though.

Yep, 117 is way too high. Now that I don't have a slipping clutch I definitely need to get it on the dyno.
My friend's shop just got their dyno up and running - if anybody in my area has HP tuners or any other software, he can hook me up with some dyno time for cheap if you're willing to help out.

During a cruise last week, there was a bolt-on? 5.0 I ran with. I downshifted to 2nd as we were slowing down, as my revs from the downshift came up he took off, probably had a car head start, and from 45-110ish I was ahead by about 2 cars. Jumping races must be the thing to do...

Yep, some people just don't know how to race. This 6.0 GTO and I were playing a little bit on the way home from work the other day but I couldn't get him to just line up next to me.

There are definitely people that don't know how to line up in every car camp. I was trying to get a run with a LS7 anniversary Corvette last fall and every time I would pull up next to him he would take off before the honks even started. He didn't know wtf he was doing. I finally just got next to him and started honking it off from his rear quarter panel. He still jumped a little but I was able to reel him in and put 3+ cars on him through 4th gear. Hahaha. Stealing the hit isn't always going to help you.

Good run OP!

Haha yep, it's a little frustrating when they jump 2 cars in front of you before you even get in it and they think their car is faster than yours. That's why I HAD to rerun this guy in the Mustang and show him this LS car will dominate him lol.

Thanks Jay, I was a little apprehensive since I hear these cars run so hard and beat heads/cam cars. But the race went as I thought it should have. I'd like to run a full bolt on car after I get my car tuned.

If he had a canned tune he could be. Local auto went 12.2 at 118 I believe with DR, GT500 catback, and BAMA 93R tune.

Quick Reply: Finally got to race a 5.0
