I'm sure a top end worth a damn with a compression bump to anything near 10:1 would make it a screamer. But they really **** the bed with it as is. Still love them...minus the red guts

My dad has a 92 454 SS thing is fun to drive until you pass 3k rpms lol either way they run on a ODB1 not ODB2 system so good luck tuning it. Hell you can't even get them read at auto zone

Well apparently no one around here has one. His engine light came on so we went to see whats wrong with it. No auto parts store could read it so went to some older BBC chevy shops they didn't have anything that could read it. They told us time is changing so they are starting to build more lsx stuff just to stay in business.

I would ditch the 454 in favour of just about any other BBC build or crate engine. Sadly, as stated, it was a towing camper special engine, not a performance machine like the LS6 from the 70 Chevelles.

Even though it was a towing specific engine doesn't mean you can't get power out of it.

My dad owned a company called Choo Choo Customs (Famous for building the SS El Camino), so he got the first 454SS in the area, that night i took it crusing, and i think even the chevette at the redlight beat it.. it was called the devils chariot, devil must not been in a hurry... EVER

They are slow no doubt but they have one of the best engines to build from the start. Id love to build one that's for sure.

I would think a LSX of some type would be one of the best to build from. But they are for sure better than a 350 TBI.

454 is the worst boat anchor you could put in a light-rearend-truck. Tell me how fast you think this tug boat is now:

even the old 351 lightnings stomped the 454ss. nice trucks but slow as hell. and it would be easier to make power out of a 400 sbc than a bbc, just saying
