Default 98 ls1 vs unknown year viper

i was on my way to work a little bit ago when i noticed a viper weaving in and out of traffic.. i tried catching up and after a few miles we finally ended up next to each other at a light

we did a roll of 15 then took off

we stayed dead even up to 80

then im guessing he grabbed third and started to pull

he had about 3-4 cars on me up to 130 then we slowed down

i was really impressed my basically stock ls1 didnt get smoked a lot worse

now it was only me in the car 220lbs

it was him (bigger guy) and a female in his car

was a lot of fun,, i wish i had a passenger to tape it,,

after looking at years it has to be an 02 or older.. 03 srt went to different lights under the taillights

Thats a 1996 to 2002 viper gts.

I had one

They dyno 410 rwhp stock and average 12.2 at 118 mph in the quarter.

The best drivers have went 11.7 at 121 mph.

One of the fastest 1990s cars ever made

Until the latest Gen V was released, these are the only Vipers I would consider owning. I feel the new one finally captures the 96-02 GTS magic.

Don't forget they have those awesome forged motors in the pre-2000 Gen2 years! I'd love a '97 GTS, white, blue stripes, with a couple of turbos.

This exactly ^^

And no offense to Viper fanboys, but through turbos is the only way I can stand the exhaust sound on the Viper V10s.

No...

That Viper has at least 100rwhp more than you, and is lighter. You would need a cam, full bolt ons and then a tune to even have a chance.

I was only 3 car lengths behind him..

People have said average tune on ls1 with my mods would pick up maybe 30 or so hp

Which would definitely close that gap some..

Sounds like the guy couldn't drive very well then, if he was only 3 lengths ahead. Or maybe he wasn't pushing it all the way. I've done that many times with cars that I knew didn't stand a chance. That Viper is way out of your league with your current mods. Just the way it is. Even with a tune your car will only be around 340rwhp, and he's over 400rwhp and a little lighter.

I'm sure it was fun! Always is!

Here's a good comparison of what you would need to hang with one of those vipers. Viper even had an extra passenger just like the one you ran into.

H/C/I Trans Am vs 99 Viper GTS - YouTube

I held with him till 80.
Shifting into 2 and 3rd he would drop back. But as soon as he grabbed 3rd he took off. Hit 130 and seemed I was keeping it even at that point then he hit brakes because we were getting close to another traffic light.

I want to do h/c/I when I get the funds

I was surprised he didn't put bus lengths on me though. But he was big.. Like 280+

You don't need heads to take one of them out. Get your trap speeds in the 117-122 and you take one with good tractiono

He just wasn't trying. I've done that before against a Genesis, I left it in fifth pull a length or two and let off. Next race I went down to fourth and pull a couple of lengths, then I put it in second and honked it off. Sadly my car was so loud that he couldn't hear the honking and that never transpired. The final race was absolute destruction.
