LS2 T56 GTO Kills 440 Dodge Coronet
Friendly race from when my GTO was still stock motor. Unknown mods to the Mopar except it had a stalled 727 tranny and a regeared diff. Both on street tires. My car was mostly suspension with headers, clutch/driveshaft upgrades and a tune. Dyno'd 372HP/376TQ to the tire. Really fun race, itching to get back to Mexico

I've ridden in a lot of the classic muscle, and yeah, most aren't that impressive. The one exception, 68 Corvette 427 Tri Power. That son of a bitch would move, it was easily on par with my C5 corvette.

I remember seeing a test where they ran all the fastest muscle cars of the late 60's in total stock form on stock tires. The fastest of that test was the Boss 429, and it ran like 13 flat at 105 if I remember right. Some of the race oriented versions of these motors were pretty fast though. Like the 426 race hemi and the 427 cammer. They were more like 11 second capable. Of course just simple mods would really wake these old big blocks up, and they'd run much faster when dialed in right

Good run! Too bad the Coronet could not hook up. It might have been a better race.
On a side note, I had that same car in high school but in the Super Bee version. It had a 383ci motor with a 727 Trans and Sure Grip 3.23. That car was running mid 14's with mods which was pretty decent back then. Once the Grand National came out though, it changed everything.

Mid to late 1970's to late 1980's was a dead period for cars in the US. Comparable to the Dark Ages for cars. Most of us at that time picked up old muscle cars because there was really nothing to choose from in the performance market until the 5.0 and Grand National came out.

I was surprised when the owner asked if I wanted to race.. I thought it'd get out of the hole better than my GTO, but it was still really cool to see someone with classic American iron actually run it and not just keep it in their garage for once!

Put some headers and decent exhaust on the Mopar and some tires and it would do well. The old time muscle cars would run 14s with the terrible tires and usually restrictive factory exhaust. They would come alive with exhaust work and some traction. You see it at the Pure Stock Muscle Car Nationals. Rebuilt internals with exhaust and tires.
