WS6 vs. Gallardo
 

Haven't posted on here in a while, but figured you folks would get a kick out of this.

I was returning from a friend's house yesterday evening helping with his 800-900ish HP vette. I merged onto 495 in the Boston area, headed south, moved to the left lane, put the car in 6th and started my usually uneventful 90 minute drive home. A few miles into this, I was fidgeting with the radio when a blue Gallardo and white BMW blow by goofing off. Nothing special about the BMW - some sort of 3-series. First, this never happens where I am. The odds of me bumping into an aggressive exotic while I'm in the TA just doesn't happen. I think a lot of us always hope it happens - but it never does.

I put the car in 5th punched it up to 90 or so to close the gap and see if the lambo driver was willing to go. I was in the left lane, he was in the center. As I approached, I'm about a car back off his left quarter panel doing ~80 when he hits it. I drop to 3rd and hit it. Its a little chilly outside so the car spins....crap. Correct it, drop to 4th, car hooks up perfect. I immediately start pulling him in. The road isn't clear and we approach a corner. He gets out of it a little over 100 while still ahead, I do as well but the momentum carries me a few cars ahead. The road straightens out and opens up and I can tell he is going to hit from several cars back. It is what I always hope happens on a long drive - aggressive exotic ends up next to me on an open straight-away. This 2nd go should be a very clean run. I drop the car to 4th, and roll up again to about 80 mph. He stays back off my quarter panel. The weather is perfect for a 4th gear run. Too cold for 3rd, but perfect for a 4th, 80 to 130-ish or so run. I crack the passenger side window to try and listen for him hitting it. I can't hear shit over the supercharger bypass. He hits it about 2 cars back off my quarter panel. He is advancing with some authority - turns out Lambo's are fast, and I am starting to question whether or not this is going to go the way I expected it. I wait for him to get to about my door when I hit it - don't want any excuses on this one. The weight comes off the front of the TA suspension, boost goes to ~10 psi and I can tell the car is fast tonight. The lambo advance immediately stops about 1 car ahead and I decisively start to reel him in. I go by at about 110 and stay in it to the top of 4th (~130 ish). I have 3-5 cars on him at this point and I can see I am starting to really walk away. I briefly shift to 5th to continue the run, but have 2nd thoughts about getting up to some insane speed (which happens pretty quickly) - also, we are coming up one some cars so I get out of it, hit the breaks and the lambo flies by. He moves to the far right lane to move around the upcoming cars, punches it again and zips off weaving through the light traffic - no interest from me in doing that.

The lambo was peppy, but I expected it to be a little quicker. Once I was into boost, it looked like the lambo threw an anchor out the back. Beautiful car though.

TA is a D1-supercharger, home built kit, 383 all-bore engine. It runs around 700hp to wheel at about 14 psi. Its been in this trim as a reliable street monster since about 2004.

I'd send pictures, but it is pretty underwhelming. The car looks bone stock. The only thing that looks like something may be hiding under the hood is that the front plate area has a screen mesh on it rather than a plate to feed the intercooler (pic below). Other than that, it looks like a stock pewter Trans Am leaving strips at 80 mph.

The power I make is no longer that impressive, but I think the longevity of the setup is a testament. The car has about 50k miles on it at this power level and has, so far, been a reliable street monster for the last 15 years.

Appreciate info. Very cool setup & like the stock look. Also very much agree on reliability & longevity with a street car setup. Bringing with it close to 700hp. Awesome.

What rear gear ratio?

Built 10-bolt (others whined too much) with 3.73 gears.

They stay together as long as you don't do a clutch dump on slicks. I run a Toyo R888r tire (or whatever the next in this series is) and it is sticky enough to hook 3rd without causing rear longevity issues.

10bolts aren't as terrible as some think and from the aftermarket rearended cars ive rode in a 10bolt is certainly quieter. I'm a nvh freak. I hate something causing nvh issues. But these aftermarket rears can be tamed to near stock nvh levels. Just have to mount them in rubber bushings vs poly or rod ends.

My formulas 10bolt lasted for years until I sold it but I have friends who have went through 5 a piece really is hit or miss. I can say I was never really confident in that rear lol

I ran to 11.0s in mine with stick. The ring and pinion was fine but i kept busting axles. Then once i busted the ring and pinion testing my ignition cut i stuck the fab 9 in.......and chased nvh issues.

It's a shame gm didn't use a 8.5 10 bolt or a 12bolt on it oe. Those cars woukda been perfect in that era then.
