Default Mustang 5.0

Alright there is this kid in one of my classes that is stuck on Mustangs. Now he says that he is getting around a 87-91 Mustang. He says that his car will keep up with me and maybe even beat me. While he is saying this stuff to me im thinking what a dumba$$. How can a 302 beat a 350. My car isnt that slow anyway. I have a 99 Z28 with a lid, mass airflow sensor, K&N air filter, M6, SLP Loudmouth, Taylor wires and headers but they are stock. I'm not sure what all I have because I bought the car used. I'm gonna get it dynoed soon also. But anyway will a Mustang 5.0 be able to hang with me?

Are you guys joking with this BS? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> The only doubt I have in my mind about this scenario is the fact that the owner of the 5.0 is a "kid". To think that a 5.0 "can't" beat a LS-1 is plain ignorant, don't fool yourselves! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" /> Most of the people on this board have the utmost respect for them whether they like to admit it or not. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> Just I have have complete respect for LS-1's! <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

If he is stock .Yes you will but it dont take much to make them run good.Low 13 or high 12s is easy with couple of boltons and a good driver. The last new one i bought was a 93 lx 5 speed. All stock it went 14.4 @ 96 then with 3.55s and slicks and all the free stuff it went 136 @98.

Assuming you are both stock or equally modded, the answer to your question is very easy - no.

However, the issue isn't "How can a 302 beat a 350?". The issue is that stock for stock, or mod for mod, the 5.0 Fox Mustang is not going to keep up with an LS1-powered F-body, assuming the drivers are adequate in both cars.

If the car is modified and you are not, then who knows. At that point, we revert back to Forrest Gump's "life is like a box of chocolates" statement - you never know what you're going to get.

Even with very little weight reduction, you can go 12's with a "bolt-on" 5.0 - especially an LX, and especially the lightest of the LX's - a Coupe.

We obviously know what an LS1 can do with bolt-ons, so please keep my statement in its proper context. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

BTW John....Assume you're talking about Troy Carter? NMRA F/S car. Has gone 11.9's @ 3300 lbs on DR's. Hardly "stock", but certainly a very good running car indeed.

</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">true, but thats an LX. they're faster than normal 5.0s.</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No offense, but that is an inaccurate statement. All 79-93 Mustangs are essentially the same platform (really all the way up to 2004, but they made some significant changes in 94). The only difference between an LX 5.0 and a GT 5.0 is some weight - usually less than 100 lbs. The engine, transmission, drivetrain, gearing, suspension, tires, etc, are all the same.

Back in 88 and 89 i watched many of my friends break into the 13s with stock mustangs. In 88 i bought my wife a 88 lx automatic and all stock eccept for the free stuff it went 14 .0 @ 100.I was called a lier on the corral for this but it is true.Maybe that car was a freak.Like bob said they are no ls1 thats for sure but they do run good if driven right.Low 13s are easy with slicks and gears and the free stuff.

Full weight, stock longblock 5.0 (87-93) will go like 13.3-13.5 with boltons. Sure you can get a 5.0 with top end work to run fast, my friend Troy campaigns an NMRA car that runs high 11's on drag radials and stock bottom end, at like 3200 racweight. I've seen a bolton 93 Cobra do 13.3@104mph.

5.0's dyno like 175rwhp stock.

My 88LX beater had 140k on it and stock with headers and drag radials and other exhaust I went 13.9 on a 2.05 60ft not even knowing where to shift the car.

ive got a stock 88 5.0 that wants to run me.... gawd only know why he wants to run, but he wants me to let him know 2 days in advance so he can get a set of slicks for the car....

oh and yes im sure the car is 100% stock <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> He barely can pull on a stock auto 94GT!! SHEESH

he must have a loose screw in his head <img border="0" alt="[jester]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_jest.gif" />

really i dont think anyone is dissing 5o's.
I respect them and i think they are neet cars, but the point is; by the mod's DTG has, he should be able to run 12's easy. Can you tell me that a LX 5.0 will run 12's?
Therefore he should not worry about losing. That is why i made my comment.

*there is not doubt that a 5o can haul and break into 12's with some mods

If it is truly stock then the LS-1 will kill him, but with some bolt ons, some good tires, and a good driver he will have his hands full! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

And yes, I will tell you that a LX 5.0 WILL run 12's! <img border="0" alt="[worship]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" />

The Mustang is question may be stock and if so, will lose terribly if both drivers are equal. However, back in 1987, a stock engined LX5.0 set a class record and ran 12.70's to do it. I think it was NMCA racing, but I'm not sure anymore. Gears, slicks, air silencer removal and a shortbelt, viola! Granted, that was a stripper car, ordered that way so it could be raced. But it happened. It's really not difficult to make them run well.

An LS1 is a 346 not a 350 <img border="0" alt="[driving]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_driving3.gif" />
