Default 1993 TA vs. 2003 350Z

My friend and I were gonna take my Ta for a cruise today so I called my other friend to see if he wanted to go. He has a 350Z with cold air, headers, high flow cats, and cat-back. The car made 245 rwhp and 238 rwtq. He ran a 14.5 @ 97 mph on a 102 degree day. To give a reference, my dad ran a 14.4 @ 97 mph with his stock 2004 GTO on the same day and has since gone 13.7 @ 104 with much better track conditions. His 350Z is definitally not a drag car but it's quick for what it is and I've always been impressed with it's roll-on performance. We've raced a few times, but never what I'd call a clean run. Someone always messes up or there's traffic or something.

The TA is a 1993, A4, pretty much full bolt-on, and a blower cam. Makes 323 rwhp and 300 rwtq all at high rpm with poor low end (for an LT1). I've run a 12.8 @ 106 mph on a cold day.

We went out to the local spot and lined up where there were no cars. Cars behind us kept us from stopping. We went twice. The first time was from a 15ish roll. We both hit it and he pulled slightly as I spun a bit and then I caught traction and slowly started pulling him. I pulled harder as our speeds increased and I probably had 3 cars on him by 90 mph. Then we went up onto the highway and hit it from a 50ish roll. I let him hit it first then I hit it right after. That turned out to be a mistake as he pulled a solid car on me before I started pulling back. I slowly pulled him, once again pulling harder the faster we went. We took it to 120mph where I had about 2 cars on him.

Definitally very good runs. Basically it came down to power/weight ratio. I was probably at a 500 lbs weight disadvantage which greatly reduced my hp advantage. At the track it would be a totally different story, but the Z definitally impressed me!

Go on past 120 and he'll pass you...DONT ask why...he just will, its a 350Z thing...(no, im not kidding you, if he was 2 cars back at 120, by 140 he would have had you I think)

I wounldn't be suprised at all if he passed me out at 120+. The car is definitally not slow and my auto TA just doesn't do very well from a highway roll.

On a side note since you have ful bolt ons and a cam, have you had your car tuned? what are your cam specs? seems like you should have more rwhp.

I had PCMforless burn a chip for it. The specs are duration 224/236, lift 536/555, LSA 114. I was happy with the peak power because I was looking for 320, but the curve is definitally messed up. Under 5000 rpm I lost alot over my bolt-on power curve. The lower the rpm, the more hp and tq I was down. Over 5000 rom I gained alot and I also don't make peak power until 6400 rpm and then the power stays up there. The transmission shifts right around 6300-6400 rpm though, so I'm definitally not taking full advantage of the power curve. I did gain at the track with the newer setup, so it did help, but not as much as I thought it would. Like I said, I was gonna put a blower on it but I never got to it. I think even a hotcam would give me the same peak hp and much more power under the curve than my current cam. I also think that 4.10 gears and a 6700 rpm shift would drop the car to consistent 12.5-12.6's because I would be able to take full advantage of the better power band. Oh well, my friend is buying the car so he'll have to figure it out.
