Stock for stock the SS will beat it. The SS will kill the VR-4 badly from a roll. But, you can do some pretty simple and effective mods to even it out and make the Vr-4 faster than the SS.
Here is a link with some good info:

Also, before you buy a vr-4 you should be aware that the transfer case is very delicate. If you do some hard launches the transfer case will be fucked up.

I'm sure you'd never be satisfied with a VR-4 if you have your heart set on an LS1 powered F-Body. That being said, the 2nd gen VR-4's (94-on) don't have quite as fragile a transfer case as the 1st gen ones do. Just a $15 boost controller makes a low 13/high 12 second capable car out of one if driven aggressively at the track. I've got two TT's, a 92 as a daily driver and a modded 93 to play with along with my 2000 SS A4. If drag racing at the track is your thing, just keep looking until you find the perfect F-Body. If you're into street racing or the occasional impromtu stoplight race, don't count out the AWD of the 3/S. AWD is a great advantage on slippery unprepped public streets when it comes down to racing. My SS and 93TT have been close in performance through various stages of mods with the SS coming out on top at the track and the TT coming out on top on the street. Believe me, though, it took a lot more work to get the TT running 11's than it did the SS. Once I get my 408 in the SS this little competition between my two cars will be over. There's no way the 93TT will ever be close to the SS, performance wise, again. To the original poster: Since I own both cars I'll gladly discuss what I've done to both cars if that will help you in any way decide what route you want to take. Just PM me.

Man, wait for te LS1 car, my friend bought a 98 SS M6 for 6500 in cherry condition with 64K miles. Other guy i know got an 02 Z28 A4 for 14K and it had less than 20K miles on it. THat VR4 is a NEAT CAR, but it will spend a lot of time in the shop...wait on a good deal on an LS1, if you REALLY WANT ONE, McAllen/Brownsville/Harlingen/Alamo TX has a TON of LS1 cars sitting on dealer (private and commercial) lots in great shape for VERY good prices. Check around down there if you know anyone.
