Gave 2 kids in a 3rd gen a history lesson in the big black buick
After finally getting the GN running right (had to upgrade fuel pump then TPS took a dump) i headed to Pumpers and filled up with some 110 to clean her out a little. So im cruising around after a couple stops to adjust the boost level and all of a sudden i hear a healthy sounding motor and a good hard tire bark....then coming up behind me i see a late 3rd gen camaro with daytona hood, nice clean car. After a couple redlights i realize the kid driving was doing his best to chirp the tires everytime he got next to another car so i slow a little and wait for him to get beside me...neither of the kids are even looking at my car and as we leave from a light he takes off pretty good like he has all along so i slowly press down on the gas just enough to make it really squall them on the 1-2 shift. At this point i have all of their attention when the passenger yells at me if my Monte Carlo has a 350 so i tell him its a Buick and its just a V6 and he says they have a 350 so i figured id have a little fun with them. He tellsme its a new motor and they were out looking for some fun so i tell him ill run him and try to keep up with my 6 banger so he's like ok. We're rolling along about 25 and im in 2nd and slowly press down on brakes and gas to build a little boost...as the turbo spools and gets noticable i start getting some strange looks...then the guy launches so i floored it, i immidiately made up the 1/2 car he jumped me then by the time i hit 17psi i had abut 2 cars on him...middle of 3rd they were about 6 back. They hollered for me to pull over and i had to let them count the plug wires for them to believe it was a V6. Cool kids just couldnt believe they didnt know what a GN was.....they should teach this stuff in school.

I learned of a Grand National before I even heard of f-bodys. Thats all the old man talked about, GNs and Vettes, GNs and vettes... Some just dont know about the turbo-powered american sedans of yesteryear

I'm curious about the new motor...Did you ever find out what was under it?

Yeah, it was an old school 350 with performer intake, holley carb, they said it had an Xtreme energy cam. Said it was just built but i dont know anymore about it than that. The car was very clean inside and out...was originally an LT but they had a T-5 in it.

those cars were definitely ahead of their time. i know a guy that had a grey t-type that had stock bottom end but everything else was,uh, not.he had 30 psi and left the line on 15 but could never hook, even on 29.5 x 10.5.i think it weighed 3850 with him and ran 6.90s at 104 with a 1.6X 60'.one time we ran an experiment with me driving it since he weighed 150-200 more than me.hosed down the intercooler with a full 10 lb nitrous bottle and i hit the starting line=results were me almost s#%#$in my pants after spinning past the 60' and on the top end the driver side window popping out of place at the end of the 1/4.it finally blew but i think it was because injectors went static.

They may have been cool kids, but, even if they could not tell by the sounds, when they peered under the hood they were busy counting plug wires/coil packs instead of noticing that big ol' hairdryer sitting right in front of them??! Either they were blind or just completely missed a whole era of performance!! Oh well, at least they were cool enough to be in domestic muscle instead of some rice-a-roni P.O.S.
BTW; nice eye-opening, educational (for them) kill! We all know about Turbo Bufords, someday I'll own a built one.

Great kill story!! There's alot of guys in my part of PA, that have no clue of the power of the DARKSIDE. i should keep some kind of scrapbook, to write down all the times my 86 T-type was called a Monte.
Keep up with the education.

ah ha ha ah that was awsome good job. I remember when I was 16 back in '96 someone in my town had a GN and I thought it was just a POS with a 3.8v6. I learned the hard way too.

my bro taught me about GN's and ive always respected them for being bad rides that can beat most cars when modified.
i remeber him showing me a vid of two racing a viper and have the viper get raped
