I'm a dumb ass Yep...So I was out today getting some stuff for a BBQ and I pull up next to a Ford Ranger, yes a Ford Ranger. Its all black and worn out looking with shitty decals and shitty tinted windows. We take off from the light and I think nothing of it. But I hear his RPM's go way up, and like a lure he snagged me. I in turn hit the gas, cant hear my engine because of how loud this damn ranger is next to me. All of a sudden my car lurches and I turned insta-freak and looked at my gauges and noticed I bounced off the rev limiter. I shift gears and dust him. It turnes out its a 4 liter and a 5 speed or so he says. He said he knew he didnt have a chance but he wanted to try. It actually kept with me through first gear and surprised me enough to distract me. Nice guy though. Now if racing a car that has absolutely no chance of beating my car wasnt enough, I completely overreved the engine, something done only once before at the track, but my car was reciently stolen and recovered so no telling what kind of damage the bastard might have done to my car. I am a dumb ass and contribute to giving f body owners a bad rep. sorry... p.s. tomorrow I'm calling Thunder Racing to get a cam, new pushrods and springs... |
So...hitting the rev-limiter damages your engine? Did you mechanically over-rev your engine, or just hit the electronic limiter? The latter will not hurt your engine. |
When I glanced down it looked like 6500rpms, pushing the car over 6200rpms bends stock push rods and binds valve springs on LS1 cars. |
Did you have your limiter raised? I've heard the limit for stock cars was ~6600RPM, but I have yet to see bent pushrods from anything other than a missed gear in a stock vehicle. |

i bang the limiter EVERY TIME i do my burnouts at the track. it hits it once or twice shifting 1-2 because the tires are spinning so fast. no damage as of yet (knocks on wood). wouldn't worry about it unless it is all of a sudden down on power, or doing some wierd shit (noises etc..). |

The car drives alright, I guess I am a little oversensitive about beating on it these days. I guess I agree that they are stronger than I aparently thought. But from reading articles in GMHTP they mention that the weak link in the valve train is the springs on stock LS1 cars. Also I was talking to one of the techs at Thunder Racing and he was explaining possibilities for a slight dip on my dyno graph at around 4k rpms. He mentioned that he has seen it several times with manual cars that over rev their engines. Also my rev limiter has been raised. |
The Ranger reminds me of a funny story. I had this customer come in the other day, a high school kid, and I start talking to him just to get to know him a little better as I do with all customers. I ask him what he does in his spare time He says "I like to street race. I do illegal street racing." all matter of fact like. I thought I was in a deleted scene from The Fast and The Furiouse. I said "Really, I have a 2000 Camaro that I like to have a little fun with now and then, what kind of ride do you have?" "It's a Ford Ranger." in a tone like he was expecting me to all of a sudden say damn a Ford Ranger are you F-ing seriouse. SWEEET! Instead I have to bite my lower lip to keep from busting up in this kids face. I have heard of a lot of people dropping small blocks into s-10s or something similair (even saw a built 350 in a mazda B2000) so I decide to humoure him so I asked "what mods do you have" "right know I am running an exhoust" again in the same tone and this time with a pause just waiting for my praise of this might Ranger. "Is that it" I reply "yup" at which point I quickly changed the subject to keep from getting myself in trouble |
Also my rev limiter has been raised.
Why in the world would you raise the limiter on a stock cammed car ? Power starts to fall off around what ? 5700 ? You're doing more harm then good. I'd advise you not to shift past 6k rpms anyways. No need to go further. |
Stock tachometers suck, BTW. Another thing, in my 5.0 before the MSD set-up the rev-limiter worked by cutting fuel, not spark, NOT GOOD!!!! How does it work in F-bodies? PS, that exhasut system on a ford ranger, how could you idiots NOT know? Ford narrowed the stock exhaust to the size of this "0" through the cats so as to tone the hp down. THe ranger REALLY has a fully build race motor and only needs a re-flash to allow timing to advance past 5* (they set it at 5* so with its 25:1 compression, it wont detonate on cheap fuel). All you need is exhaust, reflash and race gas and you can tun 8's at around 170mph. Dont you know ANYTHING!? Man...Kid woulda owned that camaro... Sorry, im feeling creative. |
Speaking of stock Tach, my MSD is pilled at 6K and on my 5.0 the stock tac hits 6500 before it cuts. The chip OHM's out perfectly at 4.577. |
i bounce the hell out of my ls6's limiter at the track, almost every corner. She purs like a kitten. Your over reacting. |
