Default Stripper Z-28 VS modded EVO

My friends friend had a 2005 Evo with full exhaust and just minor bolt ons; I've been wanting to race this guy ever since he got it just to see how close of a race it would be. Obviously he would have raped me from a dig (he runs 8 flat 1/8) so I talked him into racing from 40. After the third horn we took off, and we were dead even, and as he was topping the top of his gear in 3rd, he had half a car on me, and missed forth. He wanted to race again so the same thing took place, except this time mine didn't down shift and I had to wait for the power band while he had about a car on me; well he missed forth again, and I passed him. He wanted to race one last time, I was like ok. So, mine down shifted this time and actually pulled half on him until again the top of his third, by this time we were even, and he finally managed to get it into 4th. He then started to pull; my car has a governor at 120, so when I cut off he had about one and a half cars on me and kept going until around 130. Considering what I have and what he has I think it was a pretty fair race. When I get a tune, it will be an even closer race, and I'll post it in the video section. I'll camcord it..

A week or so after I got the car, something messed up in the computer and I had to take it back to the dealer. Well, it came down to them reprogramming the computer. I haddn't even tried to top it out before it messed up, so I don't know if it came from the factory like that, or somehow they put one on it when they reprogrammed the ECU.

He races every week at the local track, so he can drive. He runs 8-8.1 consistently. He said when he tried to put it into 4th, it wouldn't go, and that was the problem. I guess since it's a rocket off the line, and that's where he likes to race from, he doesn't have much practice slamming it into 4th.

Tuning and gears sounds like a good idea. If you like to play at those speeds, maybe 3.42s.

I wonder if he is having tranny problems? Shifting into 4th is the easiest one to make and if he races at the track then he has to be using 4th.

Your race sounds about right from your discription of his car. If he has the bolt- ons minus cams his traps should be 108-110 with a tune. At least you had some fun and some nice close races!

I'm probably not going to change the gear until I find a 12 bolt with a 3.42 in it. But I dont plan on doing that until I get a TC, and then I'll start to build the car for drag.

39-40 is where my car gets the biggest punch, I know it downshifts from 40 because I raced a civic with a hundred shot, and he would only race from 40. I still beat him by 3.5-4 cars.

Damn, that's a lot of missed gears. A lot of Evo guys have trouble getting locked out of gears trying to shift at high rpms (over 7000). This seems to be especially true with the ACT Street clutch.

Good races, though.. sounds like fun. Reminds me a lot of me & WVUTransAm, like he said.

Ya, I had three last year. It would be nice to go a whole year without one.

That sounds like a good approach. Im a big fan of ditching things you'll outgrow rather than trying to make them work. That and going faster without having to add any power
