Default My TA vs BMW

Well got my first race a few days ago. A friend of mine has a BMW, forgot what model. I6, supercharged/intercooled=$6k headerwith exhaust= $3k clutch and few other things. Says it's making well over 300hp in a 3100lb car. He's always talked **** about my brothers and mine Trans Am's. Saying he raced one a few weeks ago and killed it. He's been bugging me to race so i gave in just to shut him up. This was on a 1/4 mile stretch road.

He wanted to go from a dig, it was like 45 degrees out and I knew with the gears and headers the car woudln't move. But I agreed, he brought 3 friends and his gf to watch. First race he dumped it about 4000rpm got right off the line with no spinning and pulled a few cars on me, I milked it out at 800 rpm got into 1st lightly and just spun. same for 2nd till about 50mph. So first run I give it to him he won.

So I told him lets roll he wanted 20 I said 35. We agreed on 30, both 2nd gear I pulled literally 10 cars on him by 115. coudln't believe it. He said he missed 3rd so we ddi it again, about 8 cars. He was still pissed so the last time he wanted 20 mph.

20 was going to be 1st gearfor him, 2nd for me. I had no fear... go from the 3rd honk it's even for a second then my car just starts walking away, put about 8 cars on him till 120 when I let off. I had a friend with me in my car so he could count the car lengths. Needless to say he was pissed, and rightyfully so. I would be too if I spent over $13k on my b-mer and still got killed. He told me to learn how to drive and we'l ldo it again from a dig, I told him I know how to drive it, but when you have alot of power, with a solid axle in the cold traction is a big issue.

That made my day, this was his first loss ever. Now he's talking about getting rid of his bmw and dd. lol didn't say what for, but I'd assume something faster. He's pissed o well, hats off to the LS1

Nice kill. If you can, find out details on the car, year, engine. There is a supercharger kit for both the 328i 1999-2000 and 330i 2001-2004. They do about 330 brake hp.

Here's some details on the kit, it is $6100 without install: http://www.modbargains.com/product.a...=bmw-e46-fi002

In comparison the new bmw 335 can be modded to 330 wheel hp with $1,400 (v1 tune) and 375whp with about a total of $2,600(v2 tune and catback). 400 whp achievable with a total of $4,000 investment, adding catless downpipes, and a good cold air intake.

yeah you can get 400whp out of the 335i but for how long is the real question. The N54 is a beautiful engine but it was made to handle stock boost and power, not much more

Well there are tons of people with 375-400rwhp now with 335s, so I guess we'll see just how long it lasts. I'd be willing to bet quite a long time with the right care.

damn it would been a rape if you put in 1st at 30 even at 20mph. did you put it in 2nd for traction im guessing or to make it even?

ya for traction, the car was spinning alot that night. I told him next year we'll do it on a hott day, that way my car will have alot more traction. And first gear will destroy him.

He got his car back in highschool, daddy's got some money. It's a 323i? or 325? about a 2000 i think. I gave him credit his cars fast, but he just wasn't aware of the power the LS1 has

Not to hijack, but BMW detuned the engine significantly to try to avoid straight line performance equality with the new m3 that cost 20k more. They don't admit the reason, but in interviews with the Powertrain Project Manager (Udo Lindner) they admitted they ran the car at a higher HP level, but detuned it to "virtually eliminate any turbo lag".

Compared to the N52 engine:

The N54 crankshaft is forged steel as opposed to cast iron.
The N54 camshaft is solid as opposed to hollow.
The N54 connecting rods are thicker.

Probably didn't win best new engine and international engine of the year (2007) awards for nothing. We will see and I will enjoy racing my brothers Firebird as we continue to bolt things on, former 71 firebird owner myself.

ahhhh beamers...let's build an engine that's too powerful and then detune it
gm...let's build and engine that's too powerful and under rate it

realistically tho...f-bodies and beamers (espy the 3 series) arent really in the same class, f-bodies are more drag oriented and beamers are more twisty-turny cars. but, not too many people will say this...you can do either kind of racing with either kind of car.

I was hoping you had the win from a dig. BUT, based on the circumstances. Nice runs and kills.

Hail to the LS1!!! Nice kill man, its always really satisfying to shut up people who say they can crush you before they even see your car in action. A lot of people who have never ridden in an F-Body have NO IDEA of how fast they actually are...

Could you link me to where the 335i engine has held more than stock power for a considerable amount of time? I've been told by multiple sources that the bottom end just doesn't hold much over stock before it gives.

Nice death/kills! Sounds like a lot of fun with a beamer. Get some drag radials on there and smash him from a dig!

I had a buddy a couple years ago who had a 3XX BMW and he had just bought a supercharger and exhaust for it. I never got a chance to run him as I didn't have my Z28 yet and I seem to have lost his number (went to school in a different state), but I wasn't too impressed with the mostly stock power (I think he had a "chip" or "tune" in it, or something, just remember it wasn't much).

Hahahah, I was with him one time and talked him into racing an LS2 GTO from a light before he installed the supercharger and I didn't even think he got on it. A few minutes later he was talking about how that GTO had raped him.....that's when I realized he had floored it..... I was used to my brother's cammed LS1 and my dad had an 04 GTO, so I knew what the LSXs were capable of.

After that race, I tried to talk him into selling it and buying a new GTO (his dad had money), but his response was "I don't think owning a GTO is quite on the same level as owning a BMW...".

My response: "Well, that GTO just raped you, so get in the car so we can get to the Pontiac dealership before it closes."

Loving it. Have not dyno'd my car yet, but lots of people have with the same mods and posted the dynos, track results, and some gtech runs over on e90post.com.

I am letting others bump up their HP before me, so I don't run into too many suprises. I think the car can handle 400whp with stock internals and so do a couple of reputable tuners. I would not take it above that mark.

Yesterday in Sweden they held the 3rd annual supercar shootout where they go to an airfield and do runs from 50kmh to 250 (155mph) and the modded 335 (V2 tune, hi flow cat downpipes, and catback exaust) beat the new stock V8 M3 (420bhp, not yet released in the states) by about 5 car lengths. I am waiting for the video. The thread is over on m5board.com. There were BMW's, Porsche, Audi, and Mercedes. http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/sho...light=airfield

haha thanks everyone. He was telling me how he raced a SRT 4 neon and killed it, and a LS2 gto and beat him, I guess the goat had traction issues? Never herd of that before on one of those cars. But he still won, he did admit the gto was catching him. After the race he just asked how much power are you making I told him around 400and I get 30mpg on the highway with the tops out. lol just to rub it in alittle more
