1999 Firehawk vs. Cobalt SS Supercharged
The other night I got a hold of an old highschool friend, who last time I checked had been driving a Cavalier. Told me he bought a new Cobalt SS, and that he had the stage 2 kit on it.(Otherwise stock) Said it's pushing 240hp, and I hadn't checked the weight on the cars, but I figured it'd be a nice run against my completely stock 1999 M6 Firehawk. My car has 108k miles, and except for the air filter is completely stock(dyno at 303 rwhp). Saturday night we met at our local Walmart, and decided we'd do a run. My clutch is pretty bad(original clutch at 108k miles) so I agreed to a 35 roll. I haven't raced my car very much(or at all since i've had it 3 months) so I started in second. He did the three honks, and we hit it about the same time. Had I been in first I woulda jumped him a little more, but we matched eachother. I had him by a nose up to 100. He said he let off at 120, and his nose was at my rear bumper. I didn't redline my car or anything, but that thing moved. I was surprised he held up as well as he did. Anyone else have any experiences with this car. Wished my car tached to 8000rpm, thing sounded sick with that supercharger.

Good kill. Had you pushed your car to the limit it obviously would have been more in your favor, but those cars do get real quick, real quickly. Almost to the ES-ARE-TEE-4 level.

They are great little cars. my little brother has one and it is fast. with drag radials and traction bars they leave out good as well. I know bone stock my bros car did 206 rwhp 191 rwtq on a dynojet sae corrected, and traps 10 mph in the quarter running a 14.1.

I raced a stage three cobalt ss with the 305 horse supercharger 2.0L (the non supercharger ones, a buddy of mine, has a 2.4L naturally aspirated 4 with 171 BHP) and he got me off the line (before i had my blower, gear, and all rear end parts) at 35 mph i passed him like he was standing still. My car weighs a solid 3875lbs, and i was running on a full tank, with the top down in my 95 Z.
with the proper mods, those cars could be little beasts. but once you get up to the stage three cobalt, your talking some pretty good money to afford one. in which case i would just get something with a V8.
if i were to buy a cobalt ss, i would go with the non-supercharged ss for a little more displacement, put a procharger or something on it running 9 or so psi, header, exhuast, and lighter, aftermarket rims, while reducing as much weight as possible and adding a CAI

Even if it dosnt make more power over those rpms as long as its carring power i would take to that rpm. Usually around 6000 is when ls1's start to drop off, just think when you shift at that rpm it will put you at a higher rpm in the next gear. This way you will be making more power when you start that gear.

I will say the cobalts aren't THAT bad looking. Never seen the inside though.

My car is a 2002 A4 with all bolt ons and a PTC 3500 stall converter and with the stock cam my shift points are set @ 6800 rpm.. On the Dynoe it didn't make anymore hp after 5800rpm but it stayed flat until about 7100rpm. When my shift points where set at 5800 my car ran a 12.6 @ 108mph. With the shift points set at 6800 now I run 12.3 @ 110mph. Thats with a 1.67 60ft.
