02 z28 vs 02 gt
A couple days ago my 02 a4 z28 with exaust, slp lid, tuner, and 4 11 gears, decided to race my friends gt with slp straight pipes, msd wires, 3 73 gears with a ford racing rear, and KN intake on the parkway. We started from 35 and went to 115. I took him by about 1.5 car lengths

That depends highly on the gearing and setup. A stock 2.73:1 geared Ls1 loves to roll race from 35-40mph as it'll still kick down to first and be at ~4400rpm. A 3.23:1 geared car would hate that speed. Without checking I have no idea with a 4.11:1 rear though.

If you want a faster start then 58-64mph will kick you down to something sensible rpm wise in 2nd.
A 2.73 car would be 37-40mph and 69-76mph respectivly.
A stall will help overcome the gearing, but never fully. Other mods can also make it less of an issue.

Check the link in my sig for the gear calculator.
IMO - Ideally you want to be starting at somewhere near PEAK torque as this will give you great pickup and allow enough revs before needing to shift.
stock Ls1 peaks around 4400rpm so this is a strong rpm range. If you where much higher (5000rpm) you'd be making more power but be needing to shift almost the instant you hit the loud pedal. Not such an issue for auto's but a manual it is.
The biggest thing with auto's is getting them to kick down. If you run a shift kit or manaul valve then you'll have more control. A stall will also allow you to run higher rpms on the motor than on the output shaft of the tranny.
A stock auto won't generally kickdown to anything above 4400rpm. Hence the cap on the speed. If you manually lock it down then you can start higher in the rpms but this may not be good for the tranny and if you're slow shifting the selector it'll hold you back.
Remember you need to learn what you car can and can't do. Also that the speedo may not be 100% accurate, so learn at what indicated speed you race from.
According to the gear calculator with 3.73:1
1st gear:
4000rpm = 27mph
4400rpm = 29mph
If you're running over 30mph then it will probably leave you in 2nd @ 2400rpm. A horrible rev range to roll race from. So in this case just slow up a couple of mph to under 30mph and you'll have more success.
Either that or up the speed to make use of 2nd:
4000rpm = 51mph
4400rpm = 57mph
Again any faster and you'll be left in 3rd @ 2800rpm.
I hope this helps
But it really does pay to know you car. Like I know stock for stock a 3.23 geared car is faster in the 1320 than a 2.73 geared car. However from a 39/40mph roll to 100mph shut off my money would be on the 2.73 geared car as that start speed would be more optimal for it. Lower the speed a tad and my money would then be back on the 3.23 car.
