Default WS6 vs 300zx

So I am coming home from a car show in my 1988 300zx turbo Shiro Special and I pass a grey WS6 I thought he was turning off at a light so I accelerated past him to dive around a slow poke in the fast lane. I guess he changed his mind, or I imagined seeing a turn signal. Anyway he comes running up behind so I punch it since he is already at a much higher speed than me. Now my car spools fast. It may be 20 years old but I am running a t3/t4 hybrid, SDS stand alone, coil packs, gutted cat, gutted plenum, cone filter- its not a slow car. I've beaten 350z's. By the numbers a stock WS6 should be a good match. I really planned on running the car as high as she would carry me and keeping that V8 behind my 3.0L V6.

Sadly for my ego, the WS6 was not stock, no way in hell. My ego now looks like a mouse that escaped from a cat convention. At 115 as I went into 5th I got passed and my cars paint followed him right off the sides of my car! He slowed down, and I rolled up and his buddy asked how fast was he going. I don't know, I was at 115 and he probably had at least 20mph on me.

So hats off to you Mr. Silver WS6 in Central Arkansas.

Your car's claim to being fast is beating 350zs? That's impressive, but not quite LS1 quick (atleast half a second off). Your Z31 does sound nice though. Any pics?

In 1988 when my car came out it had 205hp at the crank. So for now I am very happy to beat 350'z. I don't think I'll tangle with an LS1 powered car again until I am inter-cooled and have done my fuel and exhaust upgrades.

Still got the old pics up, should be replaced by Monday with show pics with the new coil pack set up.

I know a little bit about Z31s. You've got a nice Z. I had a Z32 myself. If I could find another reasonably priced one, I'd grab it. Good luck with your build, is she more for the street, the track, or the twisties?

The Shiro edition with its thicker swaybars and lighter weight is probably the best z31 ever for the twisties, and I have upgrade shocks/springs but thats like saying the you won the gold at the special Olympics. I do plan on adding strut tower bars, Z32 brakes and going with lighter wheels to reduce unsprung weight an body roll, but unless I want to do a coil-over I will never be more than just average as far as handling goes. Like wise since my car is not quite a daily driver, but close to it going from a dig once my build is done is dangerous. The Shiro came with a VLSD and until I can run down a good replacement or go with a more common CLSD and related half-shafts I don't want to do the track. Since I own one of two known Shiros in Arkansas a broken half-shaft would be a disaster. A nice open stretch of road with no traffic from a roll thank you kindly.

a pathfinder intake will really wake that thing up once you intercool it, my friend has one and hes on 14 psi stock turbo, and gets 8.80's at the track.

I appreciate the advice, so don't take this the wrong way. I really do like being able to come to a V8 forum and finding good people, not haters.

The pathfinder intake requires IMHO a rather ugly hood offset. I prefer my gutted plenum for now. If I need bigger the z31 community has a fabricator that puts Infiniti q45 throttle bodies on to a custom made front mounted intake. But unless i go with an even bigger turbo I wont need that. The gutted plenum and stock TB provides plenty of air with my t3/t4.

The big things choking my car out right now are exhaust which is still stock (IIRC 2.25"), the itty-bitty stock injectors (260cc) and the fuel system (low pressure). Even without the inter-cooler just fixing those two things will see a good increase in power. The previous owner did things backwards. He added the stand-alone and upgraded turbo without the supporting mods. So I am effectively un-ricing the car by going behind him and fixing things and doing them right. He even left hose clamps off! Granted he saved me a lot of money in the long run by doing the two most expensive things first so I am not complaining.

If all goes well this fall I should be over 100hp per liter, hopefully well over. Still not a monster by some standards, but good enough for me and comparable to or better than most builds in my area.

You've got a Z31 SS? That's pretty damn sick...
How much did that set you back, I think that's the only Z31 I'd consider . Keep building it and sleigh some LS1s

If you didn't catch it, the OP was apparently banned for whatever reason.

Thanks, but it's not mine.
Mine is like that, JDM, but black on black.
I sort of wish it was yellow, but then I'd miss the black

Going into 5th at 115mph would suck at the dragstrip if the car is fast enough to hit 115mph before the timing lights.
