Default New rotors pads feel like they slide instead of grab

About 2,000 miles ago, I replaced all four rotors and pads to Napa premium blanks and Hawk HPS pads. After installation, I followed the proper brake pad break in procedure and noticed they didn't feel like they stopped a whole lot better.

Why does it feel like every other car I drive has brakes that grab harder than I have? Should I have spent the extra money on better rotors?

I sord of feel the same way about my rotor/pads. I replaced them all about two months ago with crossdrilled/slotted rotors and pads from PowerStop/Brakemotive and feel like the brakes before those were better, might just be me though.

Upgrading to stainless steel brake lines really helps. Goodridge part# 12257 for '98-2002 Camaro.

What are those anyways? How does it help with the braking system? And what are line locks? Sorry big time noob.

Stainless steel lines are better than stock becuase they are stronger. Instead of flexing a lot they transfer the pressure better to the brakes giving you better pedal feel and stopping power.

^^yup. Our stock brake lines are rubber, and when pressure is applied through them they flex, giving your pedal more of a squishy feeling. Stainless steel will not flex, giving you a much more instantaneous reaction when you apply the brake.

Something is wrong with your install or hydraulics then. Keep in mind for the first several hundred miles they may feel less grabby as they fully bed in. But after about 400+ miles they should be noticeably more responsive. I would flush and bleed your system before drawing any final conclusions.

Line lock is used mainly for drag racing to hold the front calipers locked to allow for big smoky burn outs that don't destroy your rear pads/rotors.

Idk, it might just be me, the brakes are fine though, had the same set up on my old V6 with no problem. The thing that's weird is if I do a hard brake it feels like the brakes are grinding or something, hard to explain. Regular braking and everything else is fine, it's just when I go fast and have to do a hard stop it feels odd.

For me, low speed braking feels fine, like how it was before the change. Abruptly braking from highway to moderate speeds feels like you wait for the car to slow down, instead of you feeling the brakes gripping hard and having complete control of the vehicle.

I was driving my friends 2004 CRV and the brakes are a complete different story, and he only uses standard parts too. You can really feel the g force as the car slows down. I WANT THAT!

That could be the ABS kicking in. It feels weird when it engages

What about pad heat? I am under the understanding that hawk pads like to be hot to grab fast. The last time I went into a sequence of turns I felt my peddle get hard like it wanted to get stomped on and it was very responsive.

Did you clean and lubricate the slider pins and inspect them when you did your brake job? If not, they are probably the problem and size up on us quite often.

Good point, inspecting those pins as well as the function of the piston should be routine procedure during a brake job.

boricua - Have you done the recommended break in procedure yet?

I think I did my brake job right: I lubed the outside of all the pads and pins, clamped the calipers to bed the pads in, had the brake fluid cap off while doing the whole brake job and after the job I pumped the gas pedal a few times to make it official.

But I think 01ssreda4 explained it.

How does the abs feel in your opinion.
I feel like when I have to make a hard stop, ill press the brake hard and its almost like the piston lets go or something like this. It keeps me from stopping as fast as I need to sometimes.
Idk, it dosent feel right. I just did pads, rotors, and just had a bleed/flush job done today and it still does it. If this is the way its suposed to be then these brakes on these cars suck ***.

It sounds to me like you are. This is a classic issue with all GM calipers I've ever seen where the slider pins are seized or not lubed properly. If you look at the pins on our cars, they will have flat spots on them from wear. After a certain amount of abuse, they start to be come square in some places and no amount of grease will make them work. So, new pins may even be in order.

Did you get any lube on the braking surfaces...?

Lol oh boy. I never put lube on the pins, or on ANY sides on the pads. Am I in trouble?
