Default tired of f#&%ing with nut on top of shock

im replacing my shocks and cant get the nut off at the top of my passenger side. its just rusted beyond hope. its been soakig in a pool of pb blaster for two days and nothing. im plannig on just cutting the shock in half with my sawzall or cut off wheel. i think im going to cut it off towards the top, any ideas on where the best place to cut it off would be at. yes, the springs are compressed safely.

If you have a impact try that first. Otherwise notch the nut and cut it off.

You are using an impact correct? If its rusted beyond repair I'd carefully cut the nut and chisel it in half. Shouldn't take long if you are decent with a grinder/cut off wheel.

Thumbs up

F-body rite of passage, welcome to the club.
Tip; when you put the new nut on cover it and the threads with grease so the next poor guy won’t have to go thru that crap next time.
Mine when I took it off...

OP, just learned from a gentleman at Napa that the nut on top of the strut plate is called a prevailing lock nut, you could probably call your local napa and see if they have that type of lock nut for a 10mm by 125 pitch which is the thread size of the strut plate,

My store didnt have them so the only advice he could give me is to purchase the nylon lock nut they now use and place blue loctite to ensure it locks..

Just thought i would share some info i found out

I installed my shocks and the top nut wasn't really rusted that much. Installed same setup for a buddy and his passenger side was extremely rusted. I had to get a screwdriver and hammer and vicecgrips and just slowly work it out and off. Took forever but he wanted to save his shocks. Yeah its a pain good luck!

Too many people worry about getting the nut off. Just cut through the shaft (after compressing the spring - of course). A saws all will cut it in less than 30 seconds.

I dont want to be welcomed to this club. Mine is FUBR. Not sure how I'm going to do this. Kinda shame on GM engineers for this one. Why isn't there a hole on the top of the chassis strut tower to unscrew the strut nut like every other car. Plus it would air out and prevent moisture build up. I doubt I can get a cut off wheel in there so I might just start with cutting the strut in half with a saws all so I have something a little smaller and safer to work with.

I want to salvage the struts cause they are still good but it is thrashed. So rusted its crazy. I looks like something off the titanic. It almost doesnt even resemble a nut. lol

I'm wondering if I cut the nut off if I can re tap the threads, Cause they are that gone.. Trying to up load pics but theyre not working for some reason. Hopefully im not high jacking your thread OP. 8)

i ended up using a cutoff wheel to get it off. minimal damage to the surrounding part. so i was able to finish my koni/bmr install finally. it ended uo taking 3x longer than what i expected due to the nut and the removal of the sway bar nuts. both of the bolts on the sway bar snapped on me before the nuts came off. luckly i was replacing the factory sway bar with a umi unit anyway.
