Default MWC Long or Short arm ? Need advice

Hey guys,

Have a few threads going but to get a better response on this particular question I figured I'd post in this section.

I am planning a turbo 400 swap over winter. I'm somewhat crazy and need to map things out and have a plan before I start... so I'm in the process of making parts lists and choosing parts etc...

My question is for a 50% street driven and 50% drag raced car, whats my best option here... I already plan on using Midwest Chassis for these parts regardless just based off of my prior experience with them...

As a part of the 400 swap as all of you know, I'll need to pull torque arm off trans tail shaft and get a new trans swap 400 style crossmember. I already have a tunnel mounted MWC drive shaft safety loop and a S60 rear end.

My question is am I better off going with the turbo 400/long arm relocation crossmember and mounting that torque arm to the trans crossmember or should I go with tunnel mounted torque arm setup and buy separate trans crossmember for the 400?

Easy enough to pull my existing loop off and re-sell since the tunnel mounted arms have loop built in...but it does end up becoming more expensive to purchase the tunnel mount tq arm setup and a separate trans crossmember when I could kill two birds with one stone there...

I run Texas Speed true dual dumps for an exhaust, so clearance may be issue for one or the other as well...

Thoughts advice opinions?

thank you.

bomb around town periodically...trailer to spot for street races and trailer to track for track days. its about half street driven and half drag raced at this point. street driven meaning cruising around for half hour or so park it and cruise home. no highway driving much just around town on 45mph or less speed limit type roads..

Thanks for the advice, that is what I'll do. You guys will be getting a phone order from me in the next week or so...wanted to take advantage of black friday sale and the discount from getting my rear end from you guys for the tq arm and I want to upgrade my lower control arms while I'm at it too. Have poly ends now, want to change over to your heim joint style arms.

I believe mwc recommends the long arm for autox, because under hard braking the short arms tend to bring out the wheel hop. My car is a 95% street car and to the best of my knowledge the only benefit that a short arm has is it hits the tires harder, so launching hard is easier with a short arm. U never know when ur goona have a panic stop, so since im not building a pure drag car, thats y i personally went with the long. I have a t56 tho so maybe those are more prone to wheel hop.

Correct, short arms induce axle tramp under braking.

Unbalanced Engineering had a decoupled arm that acted like a short arm under acceleration and a long arm under braking.

Unfortunately, I chose a long arm.....then a relocation bracket. The combo probably cost more then a short arm setup. It was ok, but the noise and harshness was there from being chassis mounted, and it was a pain in the *** to remove and install. I finally said the hell with this thing and sold it and went short, and have not regretted it one time. That's why 99% of the time my advice is short.

So you're experience was a long arm/relocation mounted TA was louder and harsher than a short arm TA? Thanks

Bout the same. As soon as you chassis mount them they get the noise and vibration. If its on the trans tail its quiet, but who wants to do that?

Good info . I'm running a long arm and it hooks good but man I'd sure prefer not having to undo tq arm when pulling the transmission

The install is the best part of the short and the worst part of the long. Making nose adjustments is super easy on the short one too.

Hey Midwest Chassis, I need advice as well... I have a T56 01 Camaro, and was planning on buying tunnel mount tq arm w/ a catback crossmember. My mechanic told me it’s a pain to setup including a lot of testing and readjustments. I plan to buy double adjustable PHB and LCAs along with it.

I’m new to the aftermarket 4th gen suspension, as my car only has 1.25” lower springs, non adjustable PHB, and non adjustable LCA’s from UMI. I bought a Moser 9” for the car awhile back, and figured I’d get a jumpstart on the suspension.
