Default Drag Tires & Rims

I spun like crazy at the track with my Goodyear tires so it's time to buy some drag tires. I am aware of the Nitto's but what else are folks running.

And what types of rims can I run? All 3rd & 4th gen rims? Am I better off just going to the local junk yard for some rims? Is it better to go with 16" vs. 17" vs. something else? All of these questions, good thing there are plenty of experienced resources out there.

There are Nitto or BFG Drag Radials. BFGs dont last nearly as long, and suck in the rain. Nittos can be daily driven on (8-15k miles usually depending on how you drive and air pressure).

Then there are the DOT legal bias ply tires. Mickey Thompson ET Streets and Hoosier Quick Time Pros. These are basically drag slicks, with tiny lines in them to make them street legal. These dont last that long on the street, many people use them at the track only. You can drive on them though, like on weekends and cruise nites. Many people who drive them a lot on the street get tubes for them since they puncture easily.

Finally there are full slicks from Mickey Thompson, Hoosier, and M&H.

15" rims are the best for drag racing, although you may have to grind a bit on your calipers or run a spacer to get them to fit. 16" is much better than 17". There are 16" MT ET Streets

A popular wheel is SLP takeoffs, or early 90s "salad shooters". Both of these can be had pretty cheap. Or you could do the junkyard thing.

J.and now a 16" Hoosier slick, there are no 17" slicks for our cars.

Thanks for the detailed response but it prompted a few other questions:

What the heck is a salad shooter? I have heard that several times.

Is there a technical advantage with the 15" rims vs. 16"? I would rather not "grind on my calipers" or **** around with spacers. But if there is some competitive advantage would reconsider.

The salad shooter rim is the rim found on the 93-97 LT1 Camaros (5 slanted spokes). Not sure if the V6 models had them, although I have seen a few.
