Default Problems w/ my Wilwoods

I have the Wilwood six piston on my SS. As soon as they get up to normal driving temp. they grind and squeak really bad. When I step on the pedal the vibration wants to take the wheel out of my hand. The hotter they get the worse it gets. When they cool of they're fine. I called Wilwood and they have no clue. Thanks in advance...

It came with Q's, that's what I'm useing and the funny thing is for the first 1500 or so miles they were great, very smooth.

The wheel shaking is most likely due to a thickness variation.... and I bet when they finally get up to temperature, it only adds to your problem.

Do you have access to an outside mic that will measure 0.001 or down to 0.0005" ??

Yes the hotter they get the worse the shaking. No access to a mic.

Do you guys think there is a problem with the rotors when they get hot, maybe warp at higher temps?

Maybe change the pads?

I'm running Ferodo DS2500's (I got mine from Sam Strano) and they work well for daily use as well as autocross and light abuse. It's actually a pretty capable pad for most applications (short of where you need a full out race pad). You will need to get your rotors cleaned off or lightly ground/turned to clean up the stuff that's already embedded into the rotor from the current pads first, but I think they are what you are looking for. For reference, my Hawk HP+ pads were obnoxiously noisy on my car when cold, the DS2500's are silent or very close to it when hot or cold. They work well cold and even better once they get a bit of heat in them (1/2 second into a hard stop they really come up on the friction curve, but not in such a way as to cause you to lock a wheel).

I spoke to wilwood and they said to do just what you guys said. Sand rotors with 80 grit, check runout and rebed, so I will get that done and let you guys know. I will also look into the Ferdo's. Thanks for the good advice.

Keep us posted, so far my Wilwoods have no problems whatsoever. I have the Porterfields though, great stopping, lots of dust, I'm okay with that.

Are the hats and rotors floating?

So I finally got around to checking the runout, sanding the rotors and rebedding. The runout was .002 on the right and .003 on the left which is well within the .007 limit Wilwood told me to look for. The sanding and rebedding did nothing. All I can do now is change the pads. I have the suggestions for the Ferdo's and Porterfields. Wilwood has a different street pad as well. Any others you guys can suggest? I'm not worried about dusting or longevity, I just want smooth and quiet. Any other things I can look for?And CTSmechanic, this is not a floating system.

One warning, you'll have to modify the backing plates for the Ferodos (I forgot to mention that the first time). Just lay your old pad on it, trace the "notch" and grind it on a bench grinder. Took me about 2 minutes a pad.
